Associate Professor Guehlstorf's research generally focuses on environmental democracy, governance that meaningfully involves the public in decision making about natural resource management and pollution control. While traditional or liberal theories or democracy stress individual representation and elections, deliberative theories or environmental democracy emphasizes collective dialogue and consensus. Specifically, it is the applicability of deliberative democracy to environmental policy that interests Dr. Guehlstorf. His scholarship has examined the practical policy considerations environmental democracy has for genetically modified food regulations, sustainable farming practices, brownfield redevelopment programs, and wetland laws.
