There are two English major programs: the Bachelor of Arts in English (English/BA degree requirements) and the Bachelor of Arts in English plus Illinois Professional Educator Licensure in secondary English Language Arts (English/BA+PEL website). In both programs, the student earns a major in English in the Department of English Language and Literature in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The English/BA requires 12 English courses; the English/BA+PEL requires 13.

There are some significant differences between the non-English portion of the curriculum for the two programs. The English/BA requires a minor of the student’s choice, while the English/BA+PEL requires a minor in Speech Communication Education. The English/BA+PEL program also requires 29 semester hours of professional education courses, which lead to Illinois professional educator licensure to teach English Language Arts in secondary schools (grades 9-12).

All students, including those whose second major is English, must complete a Senior Assignment in English in order to graduate.

Students wishing to pursue a double-major need to complete all degree requirements for the first degree and only the major requirements of the second major. The majors can be from two difference college/schools. The student may only elect to pursue this option if both majors are valid for the corresponding degree, such as a BA in English and Psychology.

The Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) program offers undergraduate students a valuable opportunity to engage in the types of work that professionals in their chosen fields are doing.
