A major renovation and expansion of the science building is under way. The objectives are to resolve the health, safety and efficiency problems of a 35-year-old building, to alleviate crowding in labs and offices, to provide more classrooms, and to modernize all building systems and services.
"Friendly spaces" for student/student and student/faculty interaction have been included throughout.
The major features are:
new labs, department offices and faculty offices on the south of the lab wing;
a new set of mid-size classrooms south of the auditorium tower;
replacement of the upper auditorium with two floors of classrooms extending to the outside walls;
replacement of lobby entrances with two atrium spaces — one expanding further north toward Dunham Hall, the other connecting the new classrooms and offices to the south; and
a complete renovation of the lab wing and office tower.
Because it is not feasible to repair HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, etc., while using the building, the work will be done in two stages.
