The painting program promotes visual understanding that allows both representational and non-representational expression to be realized. Each undergraduate course follows a progressive series of problems designed to enable students to develop formal awareness and facility with the material and evolution of painting. Those who are accepted into the BFA program in the painting/drawing concentration are provided individual semiprivate areas in which to work. This important transition allows students to engage in the self-discipline of independent research that begins the life long learning of an artist's studio practice. Both BA and BFA students complete their study with intensive work towards a final exhibition. Undergraduates with a concentration in painting/drawing at SIUE have been accepted into graduate programs and remain active artists locally. Graduate students have gone on to exhibit at notable galleries and teach at universities and colleges regionally and nationally. For more information, see the Course Information option on this web site.
