For as long as I can remember I have been interested in both the making and meaning of art. A liberal arts education prepared me for a career as an art historian, and I chose non-western cultures because their arts differ from ours, yet their apparent symbolic differences merely reinforce my belief that all people desire the same basic things in life, no matter what languages or symbols are employed. I specialize in African art, with particular reference to the royal arts of the Akan-speaking peoples of Ghana, but I also teach courses in Oceanic, Precolumbian, Native American, Prehistoric and Ancient Arts as well. An active career as a consultant and researcher for museums, galleries and collectors locally, nationally and internationally has provided a great deal of material for classroom use, and, I hope, for my students some sense of the excitement of discovery and satisfaction of making connections that I always experience in such work. |
