The study of Art History examines specific works of art and architecture both as expressions of human creativity and as uniquely informative historical documents. Through such investigations students gain a greater aesthetic appreciation of art and a deeper understanding of its purposes in different times and places. Understanding the historical development of art also contributes significantly to a student's comprehension of the overall development of human culture through the ages.
Art History is an essential part of the curriculum of all art programs at SIUE, including art studio and art education. The Department of Art and Design also offers a B.A. in art history. There are four full-time art history professors in the department, covering all historical periods from prehistory to contemporary art.
The art history classroom is located in the basement of Founders Hall. The classroom includes seating for 60 students and multimedia presentation equipment, including a state-of-the-art iMac computer and a digital projector, in addition to 35-mm slide projectors.
