Joint Anthropology Field School and Theater International Study

In 2011 the first international field school in Suriname took place. Students spent 5 weeks in Suriname, a small country on the southeastern coast of South America. This field school was a joint endeavor between the department of anthropology and the department of theater and dance. The field school was led by Dr. Cairo and Professor Bentley. Theater and anthropology students jointly took part in learning ethnographic research methods, cultural activities, service activities and excursions. In addition students participated in their own projects. The anthropology students had the option of either the cultural or medical tract and worked with cultural organizations or HIV/AIDS programs. The theater students worked with local youth and learned about the Du Theater an Afro-Surinamese art form from slavery days.

Suriname is a former Dutch colony and is one of the most multicultural places on the southern hemisphere. Students learned through combined theater and anthropology methods and used their skills in working alongside the local population in Suriname. In 2013 the second Suriname Field school will be held.
