Program Requirements

Hieroglyphics

Prospective students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 are encouraged to apply for admission into the interdisciplinary minor in African Studies. Students desiring a minor in African Studies must complete 12 credit hours of required core courses and 6 credit hours of elective courses for a total of 18 credit hours.

Core Required Courses (12 credit hours):

ANTH310: People and Culture of Africa

(or any other related 200 level or higher course approved by the program advisor)

GEOG332: Geography of Africa

HIST352a:  History of Africa: South of the Sahara, Prehistoric to Colonial Times

HIST352b:  History of Africa: South of the Sahara, Colonial Times to Present

Elective Courses (6 credit hours):

ENGL340:     Literature of the Third World

ENGL345:      African American Poetry and Folklore

FL121:           Learning Another Language: Yoruba Language and Culture

FR111e:        The French-Speaking World.

GEOG201:    World Regions

GEOG428:     Travel Study (Africa Field Trip)

HIST  427:     History of Southern Africa
