Pre-Occupational Therapy



The degree which can be earned: Master of Occupational Therapy (M.O.T.) or Doctor of Occupational Therapy (D.O.T.)

Career outlook/Nature of profession:  Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants help people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday skills (occupations).  Common occupational therapy intervention include helping children with disabilities participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills, and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes (i.e. recovering from a stroke).

What should I major in if I want to be an Occupational Therapist? You can choose any major you would like as long as you satisfy the prerequisites for your occupational therapy program.  However, a Science related major is recommended.

What should my GPA be for admittance to an Occupational Therapy program? To be considered for admission to an occupational therapy program, usually a GPA above a 3.0 is required.  Students should check with individual programs to determine a competitive GPA.  

Is there an entrance exam required for an occupational therapy program? For most programs, the GRE is required.
