Applied Communication Studies

Requirements for Minor in Applied Communication Studies

  • complete 18 semester hours of Applied Communication Studies courses (three required courses and three elective courses)
  • have a GPA of 2.0 or above for coursework completed at SIUE

Required courses

(9 credit hours)

  • ACS 103 Interpersonal Communication Skills
  • ACS 203 Introduction to Organizational Communication
  • ACS 213 Introduction to Public Relations

Elective courses

(9 credit hours)

  • Two 300-level Applied Communication Studies courses
  • One 400-level Applied Communication Studies course

Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 to remain in good academic standing. Students whose cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0 will be placed on academic probation, returned to undeclared status, and limited to a maximum of 12 hours of enrollment per term.

Students should consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies of the Department of Applied Communication Studies at (618) 650-3090, if help is needed in identifying and pursuing elective courses that best meet the students’ academic and career interests.

Requirements for Minor in Speech Communication Education

  • complete 18 semester hours of Applied Communication Studies courses
  • at least 9 semester hours must be earned at SIUE
  • courses may also be used to fulfill general education requirements
  • maintain a minimum major and minor GPA of 3.0
  • pass the Department of English Language and Literature screening to be eligible for student teaching
  • gain advisement for professional education courses through the School Education Student Services

    ACS 434 Nonverbal Communication
