Applied Communication Studies


Dr. Sonia Zamanou Erickson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Communication Studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She earned her Ph.D. in Organizational Communication in 1988 and an M.S. in Counseling Psychology in 1988 from the University of Oregon, as well as an M.A. in Interpersonal Communication from the University of Florida in 1984 and a B.A. in Psychology in from the University of Maryland in 1982. At Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, she has been teaching undergraduate as well as graduate courses in organizational research and theory, organizational and corporate development and training, interpersonal communication, small group communication, and interracial communication. In addition to her academic life, Dr. Zamanou Erickson consults with organizations on issues of managing cultural diversity and dealing with change. Her research has centered on corporate culture management as well as issues of cultural diversity in the workplace. Dr. Zamanou Erickson serves the department as its Director of Alumni Relations and the university in different capacities including on the Diversity Council. Dr. Zamanou Erickson is a native of Athens, Greece, where she spent the first twenty one years of her life, and visits every summer. On a personal note, she is the mother of an incredible girl and the stepmother of two wonderful young men. She is married and enjoys living in St. Louis. In her spare time, she enjoys coffee-shops and long talks with friends, walking and going to the theater.
