Applied Communication Studies

Komie Bumpers is an Instructor in the Department of Applied Communication Studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She received her M.A. in Speech Communication in 2000 as well as a B.S. in Speech Communication from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1999, and she joined the faculty in 2000. Her love for the study of communication has made her a generalist in her field. She teaches 11 different courses in her department, in areas such as interpersonal communication, small group communication, interracial communication, gender communication, oral interpretation of literature, and public speaking. Komie Bumpers is also an avid writer, being an ongoing contributor of the e-magazine Identity Chasers, and an itinerant speaker, travelling a great deal for speaking engagements in both academic and religious contexts. She has been happily married for 27 years and is the mother of three beautiful children. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, attending church, reading, and singing. Her guiding philosophy is captured in a quote from John Stewart: “The quality of our communication affects the quality of our lives.”
