Applied Communication Studies


The Speech Center at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is available due to a partnership between the Department of Applied Communication Studies and the Instructional Services.

The Speech Center is dedicated to providing the University community quality assistance in improving public speaking abilities and skills for both academic and professional development.

The Speech Center provides an active-learning environment where students and staff are engaged in the process of speech research, writing, and delivery. It is open to ALL undergraduate and graduate students of ALL majors and constitutes a great opportunity for students to improve public speaking and speech writing skills. It also provides support to faculty through in-class workshops presentations on speech-related topics.

We offer several resources to students:

  • one-on-one guided sessions from trained tutors
  • assistance with research of speech topics
  • advisement with the development of speech outlines
  • help with the organization of speech content
  • Assistance with speech delivery skills
  • video recording of student speeches and feedback on these speeches
  • help with visual aids, including Power Point presentations
  • overall general assistance with speech assignments

We are dedicated to helping students plan and develop presentations. Experienced applied communication students serve as tutors and resourceful individuals who are enthusiastic and want to help fellow students succeed.

We also offer in-class workshops and presentations on the following topics:

  • effective individual presentations
  • group presentations
  • effective Power Point presentations
  • speech delivery skills

The Speech Center is located in Room 1242, Academic Advancement Center in the Student Success Center, and its hours of operation are 9-5 Monday through Thursday and 9-2 Friday.
