La Familia Valera Miranda
One of the most famous family bands of traditional Cuban music, La Familia Valera Miranda comes to the United States for the first time in more than 10 years. With Afro-Caribbean and indigenous Cuban roots, this musical family embodies the world of traditional Cuban music in the region of Santiago. The musical form, Son, displays Cuba’s Hispanic culture through its instruments—guitar, double bass and tres, a guitar with three double strings — and its African heritage through the call and response style of the songs. Singer, percussionist and tresero Félix Valera Miranda heads the Traditional Music Department of the Santiago Provincial Music Center, as well as leading the family’s musical operation. La Familia Valera Miranda has helped initiate an explosion of interest in Cuba’s rural musical styles since its debut release in 1997.
