Lawrence “Larry” Heitz – 1969 MBA

Larry can claim the title “first person to graduate from SIUE with an MBA,” quickly putting the degree to work with the company called Tubular Steel. Over the next 18 years, Larry would hold positions ranging from assistant to president to CEO. A corporate transition moved him into a board position and eventually an owner and acquirer of companies.

Over the course of the last 20 years, he has looked at literally hundreds of companies to acquire them for himself or others. He owns small manufacturing firms in Colorado Springs; firms with international sales. Larry is also invested in a culinary school geared to training veterans, and the Institute of California, which brings medical professionals from Mexico to work with Spanish speaking populations in critical care applications.

In addition to his many achievements in business, Larry has made a significant commitment to his community. He worked with St. Louis inner city churches to create scholarships and housing opportunities for grade school and college students. After a move to Arizona, he became a board member and director of volunteer programs for Tumbleweed Youth Services. The organization serves homeless youth through 12 programs designed to get clients off the streets, into education, and a job. Larry is a member of the 2011 SIUE Alumni Hall of Fame.
