Enjoy Music, Awards and a Silent Auction at the Social Work Gala

Join the Department of Social Work for its 7th Annual Scholarship Gala Saturday, March 16. Alumni and faculty will be able to network with current students and regional social workers, and recognize student award and scholarship recipients. Many will be honored, including alumnus Patrick Swierczek '00, '05, who will receive the Outstanding Alumni Award. The social hour will be from 5-6 p.m., with dinner being served at 6. The event is held in the Meridian Ballroom in the Morris University Center. The Dawn Weber Band will be providing entertainment. Tickets can be purchased for $50 per person by calling the Department of Social Work at (618) 650-5429.

Behold the Beauty: Art & Design Building Addition

Bonoff Next Up for Arts & Issues; La Familia Valera Miranda Event Canceled

Art is in the eye of the beholder, and we invite you to behold the beauty of the Art & Design Building Addition. Join us for a dedication ceremony and open house Thursday, March 21 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. This $9 million project has added 29,000 square feet to the existing building, allowing for new classrooms, studio space, faculty offices, a larger gallery and a 90-seat auditorium. Artwork featured at the event will include a gallery display with of works by Cuban artist Emilio Sanchez and pieces by SIUE alumnus Gonzalo Jose Jove Cusicanqui (Gonz) of Bolivia. Refreshments and tours provided. For more information, contact the Art & Design Department at (618) 650-5044. Acclaimed singer/songwriter Karla Bonoff will headline the March 21 Arts & Issues event. Crossing the musical genres of folk, country, blues and pop, Bonoff's songs have been popularized by artists such as Wynona Judd, Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt and been included on movie soundtracks. Fritz Marti Lecture Brings in Vanderbilt Professor

Original Artwork Up for Bid at Friends of Art Auction

Dr. David Wood of Vanderbilt University, this year's guest speaker for the Department of Philosophy's Fritz Marti Lecture Thursday, March 21, will talk about "Thinking Out of the Box (after Heidegger)." Dr. Wood is the W. Alton Jones Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt, and also holds positions within its European Studies and Art areas. His research areas range from the contemporary continental philosophy, the philosophy of art, the philosophy of time, and the philosophy of nature (including environmental and animal ethics.) The Fritz Marti Lecture will take place at 5 p.m. in the Mississippi/Illinois Room of the Morris University Center. This event is free and open to the public. The 34th Annual Art Auction will be hosted by the SIUE Friends of Art on Thursday, April 4. A large selection of original artwork in various forms of media will be up for bid at the event. Bidding will start at 7 p.m., with an hour for previewing beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets for the general public are $5. Admission is free for SIUE students, members of the Friends of Art and auction donors. The event will take place in the Leclaire Room, at the N.O. Retired Congressman Jerry Costello to Give Talk

Emeritus Professor Shaheen Returns to SIUE for Mass Comm Week

Former U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello of Belleville will speak at SIUE Thursday, April 4 about the insight he gained through his political career and what today's politicians should do to better address critical issues facing the nation. Costello, a democrat, had a 25-year career in the U.S. House of Representatives, during which he held positions on several key committees, including the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he was the ranking member of the Subcommittee on Aviation. His lecture will be given on behalf of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at SIU Carbondale. It will take place at 7 p.m. in the Lovejoy Library's Abbott Auditorium and is free and open to the public. Dr. Jack Shaheen, a Mass Comm professor for 27 years and a noted scholar of Arab and Muslim stereotypes, will present "A Is for Arab: Stereotypes in U.S. Popular Culture" as part of a master class Thursday, April 18 at 7 p.m. An accompanying media exhibit, "A Is for Arab," will be displayed. Dr. Shaheen will also be present at the Mass Communications Alumni Evening Friday, April 19, at which alumni will reunite and connect and scholarship recipients will be recognized. The SIUE Career Development Center will host an Employer Panel Wednesday, March 13 from 5:30- 7:30 p.m., featuring employers from Boeing, Edward Jones, Sigma Aldrich and others. The SIUE Alumni Hall of Fame recognizes and honors SIUE alumni who, through leadership, character and hard work, have made exceptional contributions in their chosen field, in their communities and at SIUE. Each School and College of the University selects inductees based on pre-determined criteria.

The honoree class members are recognized with a commemorative plaque that will be displayed in a prominent place within each of the respective Schools or College. They are also honored at the annual SIUE Alumni Hall of Fame Awards Dinner. Nominate someone you admire by completing a nomination form online.

Design the New University Seal

Win SIUE $1,000 with a Vote for the Mascot!

SIUE is hosting a competition to find a university seal, a symbol that will be used on certificates, ceremonial communication pieces, formal invitations and awards. All current and previous members of the University community - including, of course, SIUE alumni - will be eligible to submit a design. The final design will be unveiled at the installation ceremony on Friday, April 19. Delta Dental of Tennessee has teamed up with the Ohio Valley Conference for the mascot challenge. Cast your vote for SIUE�s Eddie the Cougar by visiting http://deltadentaltn.com/OVCmascots.aspx. The winning mascot will be recognized on court at the OVC Basketball Championships. Delta Dental will award $1,000 to the winning school�s general scholarship fund. All voting is done by fans and ends at noon CT Thursday, March 7.
