Scholarships Available Now to Students

SIUE Women's Basketball Pink Zone Game Feb. 16

Alumni, we need your help! Please join us in spreading the word to future SIUE alumni about the many scholarships available to them through the SIUE Alumni Association. The SIUE Alumni Association provides a number of scholarships each year to new and current students, including the Alumni Legacy Scholarship, the Stalschmidt Family Legacy Scholarship and the new SIUE Alumni Association Board of Directors Scholarship, which will be awarded to students who have demonstrated exemplary leadership skills and campus and community involvement.

On Saturday, Feb. 16, join the SIUE Women’s Basketball team and the St. Louis affiliate of Komen for the Cure in the fight against breast cancer. Alumni are invited to enjoy food and drinks in our Alumni Hospitality Room before and after the game against Austin Peay State University, and during halftime. Room opens at 3:30 p.m.; game starts at 4 p.m.

Alumni can participate in a variety of activities to support Komen for the Cure, including a Bucket Raffle and a Run/Walk/Bike Challenge. Alumni tickets are discounted at $7 each and include food, drink, $5 concessions voucher and access to the Men’s Basketball Game against Austin Peay at 7 p.m. at no additional cost! Biological Sciences Professor Makes Large Contribution to Department

Inorganic Chemist to Deliver Annual Probst Lecture March 11

SIUE’s longest tenured professor made a $100,000 donation to establish a new endowment for his department. During a special ceremony on Dec. 11, Dr. Ralph W. Axtell made this large donation to establish the Department of Biological Sciences Endowment, which will support teaching and research activities in a laboratory devoted to ecology and organismal biology in the new Science Building Complex. A current MIT professor will provide the 37th Annual Probst Lecture in SIUE’s Department of Chemistry on March 11. Christopher “Kit” Cummins is a professor and alumnus of Stanford University, Cornell and MIT. His lecture, entitled "Nitrogen and Phosphorus: Fertilizer from the Atmosphere to the Oceans," will take place at 7 p.m. in the Meridian Ballroom. It is free and open to the public. While at SIUE, Cummins will also hold a seminar for Chemistry faculty and students, discussing “Coordination Chemistry and Molecular Recognition in a Supramolecular Container Molecule.” He will also visit with students and review their research findings as part of their formal Senior Assignment presentations. Social Work Scholarship Gala March 16

Opening Celebration for the Art and Design Building Addition

The Department of Social Work will host its 7th Annual Scholarship Gala. This event presents an opportunity for alumni and faculty to mix with current students and regional social workers. Student award and scholarships recipients in the department are also recognized. This year’s gala will be on March 16 in SIUE’s Meridian Ballroom. The social hour is from 5-6 p.m., with dinner being served at 6. A band will be providing entertainment, and a silent auction will also be part of the night’s activities. Tickets are $50 per person. Alumni are invited to the opening of the new addition to the Art and Design Building Thursday, March 21 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Construction for this $9 million project began in August 2011, and has added 29,000 square feet to the existing building. The expansion makes room for art history, therapy and education, which have relocated from Alumni Hall on campus, and also houses the areas of painting and drawing. New classrooms, studio space, faculty offices, a larger gallery and 90-seat auditorium are part of the new addition. Immediately following the ribbon cutting dedication celebration, a gallery display with featured works by Cuban artist Emilio Sanchez, internationally recognized artist Gonzalo Jose Jove Cusicanqui (Gonz) of Bolivia and original works by SIUE alumni will be shown. Fritz Marti Lecture Slated March 21

SIUE Baseball Alumni to Reunite in April

The Department of Philosophy's Fritz Marti Lecture will take place March 21 at 5 p.m. in the Mississippi-Illinois Room of the Morris University Center on thr SIUE campus. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. Dr. David Wood of Vanderbilt University will be this year’s guest speaker. Dr. Wood is the W. Alton Jones Professor of Philosphy at Vanderbilt University, and also holds positions within the European Studies and Art areas at that institution. His research areas are varied, and range from the contemporary continental philosophy, the philosophy of art, the philosophy of time and the philosophy of nature (including environmental and animal ethics). He is also an environmental artist, and has published extensively, including six books he has authored. His Ph.D. is from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.
