Honors Program - Study Abroad

Study abroad is an enriching and eye-opening adventure, where learning extends far beyond the classroom. The experience will expose you to new ways of thinking, living and viewing the world. Besides building friendships and creating memories that will last a lifetime, benefits include the opportunity to learn about another culture firsthand, learn an entirely new language, become fluent in one you have already studied, fulfill major and minor coursework requirements, and develop new intellectual pursuits, skills and perspectives. Equally important for American students is the discovery of their own country's customs, traditions and values, as they see them from a foreign vantage point. By living within another culture, you are likely to gain a new understanding of, and perhaps even appreciation for, the United states and its traditions. As all countries of the world become more interdependent, it becomes increasingly important for SIUE students to gain firsthand acquaintance with other cultures and to prepare for life as a citizen of the world.

In the effort to provide our students with quality international study opportunities, SIUE is formally affiliated with, directly sponsors, or has an exchange agreement with numerous study abroad program providers and foreign institutions all over the world. Hundreds of study abroad opportunities exist all over the world; they differ in location, duration (semester, year, summer, and short-term programs), curriculum, language, degree of cultural immersion and cost, among other factors.

The Office of Study Abroad, Morris University Center room 2053, provides counseling and administrative support to SIUE students before, during and after the study abroad experience. The Study Abroad Coordinator, Julie Beall‑Marshall, helps SIUE students identify options for study abroad based on academic goals and personal needs. Students are assisted through all phases of the process: identification of suitable study abroad programs and foreign institutions, preparation of application, selection of proposed courses, assistance gaining academic department approval for proposed study abroad courses, facilitation of financial aid request for study abroad, and pre-departure advice on cultural differences, international travel, and more. For more information about study abroad opportunities, see siue.edu/studyabroad.
