Admission Requirements
Direct Admission for High School Students
First-time freshman students that meet ONE of the following criteria will be automatically admitted to SIUE and eligible for Direct Entry to the Special Education major in the Department of Teaching and Learning which is housed in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior.
- Cumulative 2.6 high school GPA (4.0 scale)
- Cumulative 2.0 high school GPA (4.0 scale) AND 990 SAT ERW +M OR 19 ACT
- Rank in top 10% High School Graduating Class
Transfer
Transfer students who have attempted at least 30 semester hours in courses at accredited institutions will be automatically admitted to SIUE and eligible for Direct Entry to the Special Education major in the Department of Teaching and Learning which is housed in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior, provided they have earned a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (4.0 scale) in coursework at the previous accredited school(s) attended.
Transfer students who have attempted fewer than 30 semester hours in courses at accredited institutions must meet transfer admission criteria AND first-time freshman criteria to be automatically admitted to SIUE and eligible for Direct Entry to the Special Education major in the Department of Teaching and Learning which is housed in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior.
Transfer credit for courses will be evaluated by the Registrar. Transfer students should contact an advisor in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior Student Services (SEHHB-advising@siue.edu) as early as possible to discuss transfer procedures.
Retention
In order to be retained in the teacher education cohort in special education, it is necessary to have:
- A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher from all secondary institutions attended
- Grades of C or higher in the foundations coursework (ENG 101, ENG 102, ACS 101/103, RA 101, QR 101)
- A grade of B or higher in SPE 100 or an equivalent professional level course
- Good academic standing at SIUE
