Computer Management & Information Systems (CMIS) at SIUE
A STEM-designated program, the Bachelor of Science from the Department of Computer Management and Information Systems (CMIS) prepares students for entry into a professional career in business computing. The program is designed so that students learn to use technical, communication, and organizational skills to provide information used to drive business decisions within organizations. Since the program is within the School of Business, Students also obtain a breadth of knowledge in the business disciplines, as well as an understanding of the value of information and how organizations manage and use information to achieve their goals. The combination of education in the computing discipline and the business disciplines is widely sought by employers today.
At SIUE, students use state-of-the-art software and tools with notable pedigrees, like operating systems (Microsoft Windows and Linux), application software (Microsoft Office), databases (Microsoft Access and Oracle), enterprise resource planning (SAP), project management (Microsoft Project and Smartsheet), modeling tools (Microsoft Visio and Lucidchart), networks and security (Red Hat and LAMP), and programming languages (Java, Visual Basic, and SQL).

Students graduating with a degree in CMIS from SIUE will be well-prepared to begin graduate school or to enter their chosen profession. The demand for graduates with an undergraduate degree in CMIS has risen consistently and continues to rise. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 12 percent from 2014 to 2024, which is faster than average for all occupations. Positions in great demand include systems analyst, programmer/analyst, network administrator/analyst, database designer, information systems project manager, systems consultant, web-based application development, help-desk consultant, and training specialist. SIUE graduates have earned positions in a variety of local companies, including AT&T, Ameren, The Boeing Company, Centene Corporation, Emerson, Enterprise, Express Scripts, Edward Jones, Hortica, Monsanto, World Wide Technology, and a variety of governmental agencies.
