SIUE Study Abroad Ambassador Scholarship

The SIUE Study Abroad Ambassador Scholarship is based on a combination of academic performance, financial need, and willingness to serve as a volunteer "study abroad ambassador" upon return to SIUE. These awards are made available through the SIUE Office of International Programs; awards for semester long programs generally range from $500 - $1250 and awards for summer programs generally range from $250 - $500.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria at the time of application:

  • Full time enrollment in undergraduate degree program of study at SIUE.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 (on 4.0 scale).

  • Application pending or proof of acceptance at an SIUE approved and recognized foreign institution of higher learning for at least 14 weeks for semester long programs or at least 4 weeks for summer programs.

  • Completion of at least one academic semester as full time undergraduate student at SIUE.

All awards are competitive! Students selected to receive a "Study Abroad Ambassador Scholarship" will be expected to provide a minimal number of volunteer hours (usually 10 - 15 hours) to the Office of International Programs to help support and promote study abroad. Typical volunteer activities include helping with the annual SIUE Study Abroad Fair (fall semester), assisting with a Study Abroad Pre-Departure Orientation Program, speaking about experience abroad in arranged class presentations or in study abroad informational meetings, writing a promotional narrative about study abroad experience for SIUE Study Abroad Website and/or monthly newsletter.

To apply, please submit the following items by the deadline corresponding to your study abroad program :

  • June 1 - for fall semester study abroad programs

  • November 1 - for spring semester study abroad programs

  • March 15 - for summer semester study abroad programs

Application Requirements

  • Scholarship Application Form

  • Copy of unofficial SIUE transcript

  • Description of financial need (1 page maximum)

  • Statement of Purpose Essay (approximately 2 pages typed and double spaced). Your essay should include:
    1. A description of how you selected your study abroad program/university and how you anticipate the experience will impact your education and/or your future career.
    2. Your ideas on our involvement with the Study Abroad Office during/after your time abroad to promote study abroad to other students. Please be specific about your ideas and individual talents and abilities. Possible ideas include but are not limited to: video projects, blogs, photo submissions, class presentations, other means of creative outreach to promote study abroad and educate students about the value of study abroad.
