Chemistry Club Meeting:  3/2/07

The eighth 2006-2007 SIUE Chemistry Club meeting was held Friday, March 3, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. in the Chemistry Club Room (SL 1107).  The present officers included Mariellen Sydow, Dave Herrmann, Crystal Hise, and Lindsey Hamilton.

Dr. Christina Demeo will be serving as the new chemistry club co-advisor.

Sigma-Aldrich will be offering a co-op scholarship for fall 2007.  The selected student will work 40 hours per week at $13-16/hour with an additional $2500 toward tuition.  The student may also take one-two courses during the semester.  Applications are due by the end of March with a résumé, 2 letters of reference, and a 2-page essay explaining why you desire the scholarship.  This is the third year it has been offered.  The first student is now employed at Sigma-Aldrich.  Steve Chico participated last year.

Old business began with silk-screening.  Another silk-screening session will be held Friday, March 16, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. in SL 2218 immediately following the club meeting.  Dr. Wiediger will be out of town; Jennifer Redding is assisting Dr. Shaw in preparing the screens.

Probst Lecture will be held Monday, March 19, 2007.  Volunteers are still needed to serve as tour guides, hand out name tags, and man the extra credit table.  There is also an opportunity for up to 10 students to attend lunch with the Probst guest at 12:00 p.m.

The glass vendor show occurred last Thursday, March 1, 2007.  It was well attended, but there was not a huge turnout, especially in biology.  The vendors plan to return again next year.  They also donated $50 to the chemistry club.

Thank you to everyone who donated items and time to the book/bake sale.  We profited $164.00, which is slightly less than normal due to the inclement weather.

New business began with the upcoming science fairs.  Judges are needed at St. Charles Community College on Monday, March 12, 2007, at 7:00 p.m.  Contact John Kauffman at John.Kauffman@fda.hhs.gov.  SIUE will be hosting the regional science fair March 16-17.  Volunteers (especially upperclassmen) are needed.

A canned food drive will be held March 26-28, 2007.  Labeled boxes will be placed around the Science Building.

Dawn Powell is coordinating the pentathlon scheduled for April 5, 2007, from 5:30-10:00 p.m.  The event will either be progressive at the Vadalabene Center or may also be held at the Edwardsville High School or YWCA.  The event could also be postponed until the April softball game.

Someone is needed to reserve the softball field for April 21, 2007.

Dr. Johnson is being contacted to host the annual spring barbecue that will be held the Friday before finals week.

Our next meeting will be held Friday, March 16, 2007, at 1:30 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:50 p.m.
