The sixth 2006 – 2007 SIUE Chemistry Club meeting was held Friday, January 19, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chemistry Club Room (SL 1107).  All officers were present.

Old business began with an update on the Anheuser-Busch tour, which will be held Friday, February 16, 2007, at 2:30 p.m.  There are twenty-four spots available for students to attend.  This is on a first come, first serve basis.  The tour will consist of a forty minute presentation followed by a forty minute tour of the labs.  There will be no beer served during this tour.  If students are interested in taking the traditional tour with beer sampling they may go to Anheuser-Busch at 1:00 p.m. and take the general tour.  Abby Huck is coordinating the event.

Probst Lecture will be held Monday, March 19, 2007.  Volunteers are needed on February 5, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. to help stuff envelopes.  They are also needed to lead tours of the Science Building on the day of Probst when many middle and high schools will be on campus.  Jaclyn Cofield and Dawn Powell are coordinating Probst Lecture.

We will silk screen t-shirts again this semester using the same designs as last semester.

Cougars Volunteering for Science (CVS) is in progress for the semester.  Volunteers are still welcome.  All volunteers are required to attend a training session.  CVS groups go out to local classrooms four times per semester for two hours each time.  These hours count as volunteer hours.  Dave Herrmann is also looking for someone to restock the supply kits before each demonstration.

New business began with the announcement of the Sigma-Aldrich Co-op.  One student from SIUE will be selected for an internship at Sigma-Aldrich for Fall 2007.  This student is expected to work forty hours per week and may take one academic course.  Look for flyers soon.  Interviews will be held in March.  Students should have a résumé, personal statement, and two letter of recommendation prepared.  Contact Dr. Wiediger, Dr. Dixon, or Steve Chico for more information.

Jaclyn Cofield will be coordinating a book/bake sale for February.

Chemistry Club would like to have another canned food drive in March.  Anyone willing to coordinate it should contact Mariellen Sydow.

Dawn Powell will coordinate the annual pentathlon for the chemistry, physics, and biology clubs.  The pentathlon will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2007, from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Vadalabene Center.  Events include kickball, volleyball, dodge ball, basketball, and ping pong.  There will also be a funny faculty event.  Pizza will be served.

The chemistry club softball game will be held Saturday, April 21, 2007, with students playing against faculty.  Someone is needed to reserve the softball field.

Our spring barbecue will be held on Friday, April 27, 2007.  Someone is needed to coordinate this event.

Other suggestions for possible activities this semester included a chemistry club euchre team.  Contact Will Kuester for more information.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, February 2, 2007, at 2:00 p.m.  Meetings this semester will be held the first and third Friday of each month.  If you are unable to attend meetings, you can still be an active member by participating in at least three other events.  All meeting minutes will be posted online at the chemistry club webpage.  Also, students should join the SIUE Chemistry Club Yahoo! Groups to stay updated with current events.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
