Criminal Justice Club - Newsletter

October 6, 2004

Hello Criminal Justice Club Members, Prospects, and Alumni:

Thanks to all of the students and faculty who attended yesterday's meeting and helped to contribute to the presentation that was made to Dr. Barlow. He emailed the club thanking us for our kindness and support. On behalf of the club, we extend our appreciation of everyone's contributions of time and money that allowed us to make that happen and show Dr. Barlow how much we care.

The club would also like to thank the professors that took part in the CJ careers discussion that took place afterwards. The continued support our club receives from faculty members is vital to our success and does not go unrecognized.

Our annual car wash fundraiser took place on Saturday, September 18th, and was a huge success. We would like to thank all of those who came to help and especially all those who let us wash your car! Photos are available on the website.

Thursday, October 7, 2004 from 12:30pm until 1:45pm in Founders Hall 0306
Chief Dave Bopp and Major Don Lask of the Edwardsville Police Department will speak on data collection and how their department utilizes crime statistics. Afterwards, they will be answering general questions regarding law enforcement. The club would like to thank Professor Frey for organizing this opportunity.

T-shirt Orders Are In
Please see a club officer or email the club to make arrangements to pick up your order.

Senior T-shirts
We have looked into the idea of purchasing "Senior T-shirts" as discussed at our September meeting. The cost of these t-shirts will be $12.50 each. All XXL items are $1.00 more. These shirts will have the names of all CJ Club fall graduating seniors listed on the back of the shirt. Order forms will be made available starting next week on our website. Simply fill out all white shaded areas, print, and submit form with cash payment to any club officer. If you do not have access to a printer or are having difficulties printing the form, contact a club officer for an order form.

Are you a fall graduate? If so, it is important that you email the club to let us know. We have a webpage on the site that lists all of the graduates we are currently aware of. We need to know your degree type along with any majors or minors you will be receiving and if you are an Alpha Phi Sigma member. We want to make sure everyone is included on our t-shirt and in our awards presentation at our Fall Banquet.

Teddy Bears for Kids Drive
As a part of our club's commitment to give back to our community, we will be conducting a "Teddy Bears for Kids" drive to begin Monday, October 11, 2004. This will be a drive to collect small, gently used or new, stuffed animals to donate to area police, fire, and ambulance agencies. The stuffed animals will be given to children in unfortunate situations or who have endured some form of disaster. We encourage all students and faculty to participate for this noble cause. We will have a box located at our desk in Kimmel Student Leadership in MUC and are looking into the possibility of locating a box in Peck Hall in the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department area. Got some spare teddy bears? Donate them to a good cause.

Upcoming Events for the Fall Semester
Finalization of plans for our aerial law enforcement presentation, including the landing of a helicopter on campus should occur in late October. Arrangements for the ISP Forensic Lab tour are being planned for November. Watch for specific dates and details coming soon.

Nominations/Officer Elections
We will be accepting nominations for all club officer positions at our next club meeting, which will probably be held in late October. Anyone interested in running for one of the five positions can submit a photo and a statement to be posted on the website for campaign purposes. Each candidate will be given the opportunity to to make a brief speech prior to the official election that will be held at our November meeting. Only paid members can run and/or vote so be sure your dues are up-to-date.

Membership Dues
There are a number of members who still need to renew membership. Check out our "Are Your Dues Due" page on the website to varify your membership status. If you don't see your name on the list, please contact the club immediately.

Thanks again for your continued support!

Sincerely,
Your Club Officers
