Submitted by: Paul G. Ellis, Northern Kentucky University.  ellis@NKU.EDU   Paul recommends the following books by Shelia Tobias.

She is the author of 11 books, among them Overcoming Math Anxiety, Succeed with Math, Breaking the Science Barrier, They're not Dumb, They're Different, Revitalizing Undergraduate Science, and The Hidden Curriculum: Faculty-Made Tests in Science. Trained in history, literature and politics at Harvard/Radcliffe and Columbia Universities, she brings an outsider's perspective to issues of science and math education in college. She makes her home in Tucson Arizona where she is currently working on the establishment of "new degrees" in science and mathematics.

We have developed: the Diagnostic Test of High School Math (DT-HSM) and are currently norming this test and are offering free use of the test in exchange for normative and validation data.  Contact me if you would like details.

A Beary Tale Come True?

The Bear Family was out for a drive on a beautiful fall Saturday afternoon. Papa Bear was at the wheel. Mama Bear was next to him. The three little bears were in the back seats. The two smallest Bears colored pictures and listened to cassette tapes (as this was the pre-CD era). Adam Bear, their first-born and a bright little fellow in Grade 4, had a question about his mathematics homework. He could not figure out the answer without seeking help. Though Mama Bear was the tried and true expert in multi-tasking, it was Papa Bear who seized the opportunity to show his genius as a math teacher, even as he sped along the four-lane highway at the controls of the family van. Papa Bear did not want to simply give Adam Bear the answer, so he asked Adam Bear a series of questions which would logically lead the 9 year old to the right answer AND a fundamental understanding of both the PROCESS and the CONCEPTS involved to obtain the correct answer in any similar problem. Didn't work. Papa Bear explained once again. Didn't work the next time either. Papa Bear was persistent. He continued. He knew his reasoning was flawless. Surely it would only be a matter of time before Adam Bear, who was obviously having a little trouble with the concepts, would catch on. Papa Bear tried speaking the same text more and more loudly, ignoring Mama Bear's gentle tugs at his sleeve: perhaps speaking volumes promotes learning? Never worked. Adam Bear began to sob and Papa Bear became totally frustrated: how could this bright Bear boy not comprehend his perfectly logical discourse? Time for a break. Head to a rest area for some hot and salty Macporridge. Mama Bear, forever discrete, handed a printed note to Papa Bear as they emerged from the van:

A  BEAR CANNOT LEARN FROM A PATERNAL.

Reading
A book/resource on teaching "effective notetaking/reading of a scientific textbook."
  1. Read each section or two sections if one of the sections is short, very carefully trying to zero in on what you don't understand, and all points that you  would like to be clarified during the class.
  2. At this point you may want to highlight underline or make summary notes on the material that you read.
  3. Next, write the section number(s) on a sheet of paper as a heading, with the time and date beside it. Underneath the heading freewrite about what you have read.

In order to share their reviews and to test creating PowerPoint presentations and streaming video to deliver course content, each produced the resources on this featured site. The site includes their PowerPoint presentations, streaming video reviews, and links to the reviewed books. The streaming video was recorded on campus at Mediavision facilities (http://www.csupomona.edu/~itac/mediavision/streaming/index2.html) .
