1. How does the meal plan work?

The full amount of your meal plan is deposited in your account at the beginning of each term. Your ID card then works just like a bank check card or debit card. Each time you purchase a meal or food item on campus, the cost of that item is deducted from your account. There are no confusing points, number of meals per week, or limits on where you can eat on campus.

2. Where can I go to eat on weekends?

The Morris University Center maintains weekend dining services and periodically offers brunch on Sundays.

3. What kinds of things are there for me to do on weekends?

There are many activities both on campus and in the surrounding communities. Edwardsville offers a 12-screen movie theater as well as restaurants featuring live music.
Bi-State Transportation and Metro Link provide access to St. Louis and all of the attractions there.

4. Can I have a car on campus?

Students are allowed to have cars on campus. However, you must register your vehicle with Parking Services and purchase a parking tag.

5. How close are grocery stores and places like Walmart to campus?

Wal-Mart, Target and grocery stories are located on the east side of Edwardsville about three miles from campus. Bi-State transit provides bus service to those areas from campus.

6. Can students have microwave ovens in their rooms?

Microwave ovens are not permitted in the Residence Halls rooms but are available in the social lounges on each floor. Students may have them at Cougar Village Apartments.

7. How does the telephone system work and how is the bill paid?

Upon registration, you will be given a personal identification number (PIN) to access the University phone system. You will be allowed to make up to $100 dollars worth of local and long distance calls a month. Your account will be billed for telephone charges and may be paid at the Office of the Bursar. It is very important that you not share your PIN number with anyone. Once someone has your PIN number, they can place calls and bill them to your account.

8. What are residence hall rooms like?

Residence hall rooms are approximately 160 square feet. (16' by 10') with a 2' by 8' closet. Furniture includes two beds with extra long mattresses and two student desks. Students may arrange the furniture as they wish. Each room has an individually adjustable thermostat. Rooms are arranged as suites with two rooms sharing a common bath.

9. Can I live in a single gender wing?

The availability of single gender wings depends on the number of students requesting that type of living arrangement. Recently very few students have requested to live in single gender wings and our wings have all been co-ed.

10. Can I have overnight guests?

Yes, you may have overnight guests with the consent of your roommates. Guests must be registered with University Housing, and residents are responsible for the behavior of their guests

11. What is the weather like in Edwardsville?

Changeable and hard to predict. Fall is a very beautiful time on campus. Summer is generally hot and humid and Winters can range from mild to frigid and tend to have more freezing rain than snow. Spring tends to be short-lived but lovely. Click on St. Louis Weather for more information.

12. What kind of computer should I bring to campus?

SIUE recommends the following minimum configurations:

For Windows PC s: Pentium III, 500 MHz , 64 MBRAM, 8 GB Hard Drive, 17 inch .28 dpi Monitor, Windows 98, and a 3Com 10/100 Ethernet Network card.

For Macintosh: 400 MHz CPU, 128 MB RAM, 10 GB Hard Drive, 17 inch Monitor, Operating System 8.x, and a Ethernet network card (already in most newer Macs)

13. Can I request roommates and suitemates?

Yes, as long as the requests are mutual. All parties have to request to live together and Housing will attempt to accommodate those requests. Your request for roommates or suitemates should be indicated on your Housing application.

14. What happens if I am placed with a roommate I don't get along with?

Your resident assistant will meet with you and try to identify what the problems are and develop a mutually agreeable contract to address the issue(s). If mediation does not work, there is a space change period in which students can move to other available space at their request or in the case of serious issues, Housing may move one or both parities to other facilities.

15. If I don't have a car, will I still be able to get around?

Bi-State and Madison County Transit provide bus service and Metro Link service to Edwardsville, St. Louis and surrounding communities. Although a car is certainly more convenient, it is not necessary.

16. How far away from the classrooms are the Residence Halls?

The Academic core buildings are about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Residence Halls depending on which hall you are in. By most standards, SIUE is a compact campus with most facilities within walking distance. Many students utilize bicycles for campus transportation.

17. Where do I go if I get sick?

University Health Service, located in the basement of Rendleman Hall, provides clinical care for acute illnesses and most common medical problems during normal hours of operation. Emergency care is generally provide by Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois which is about 10 minutes away from campus by ambulance. Campus emergencies should be reported by dialing 911.
