Inexpensive Hot Water Bath 

Students at Belleville Township High School West in Belleville, IL made their own water bath from easily available and affordable materials.  To make your own water bath you will need:

  • A Styrofoam cooler (approximately 30 X 45 X 22 CM)

  • Celsius Thermometer

  • Aquarium water heater

  • Plastic ties

Follow these steps:

  • Cut the holes as shown

  • Fill the cooler ½ to ¾ full of water.

  • Attach the thermometer through a hole made in the top of the Styrofoam cooler.

  • Attach the aquarium heater to the inside of the cooler using plastic ties. The heater should go close to the bottom

  • Tape around the hole so heat will not escape

  • Adjust the temperature until it reaches 44.5 degrees Celsius.

Styrofoam shipping containers also work to make this water bath.
