A native of St. Louis, bass trombonist James A. Martin has distinguished himself as a musician of great range and flexibility. A
former member of the Buddy Rich Band as well as the Orchestra of the
Maggio Musicale di Fiorentino, (Zubin Mehta music director; Florence,
Italy), Jim has also performed, toured and recorded with the St. Louis
Symphony as well as the Chicago Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic and
Minnesota Orchestra on bass trombone, contrabass trombone, tuba,
cimbasso, euphonium and bass trumpet.
Currently Adjunct Professor of Music
member at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (since 1990), he
is a regular performer in the pit at the historic Fox Theater in St.
Louis. Professor Martin received his musical training with Mel Jernigan at St. Louis
University (both Music and Mathematic degrees), Dr. John Marcellus at
the Eastman School of Music (MM in Bass Trombone Performance) and
extensive study with Arnold Jacobs, Edward Kleinhammer and Jeffrey
Reynolds. He also performs with the St. Louis Brass Ensemble.
