Scholarship Audition Dates for Students Entering Fall 2009

The scholarship audition dates for 2009 are

January 17, 2009
February 7, 2009

February 14, 2009

Outside of those dates you must arrange an audition for acceptance into the department. All prospective music students are required to audition for acceptance into the department even if they don't audition for a scholarship.

Instrumental

Prospective majors who wish to make a string, woodwind, or brass instrument the principal area of applied music must audition for the Department of Music. Following are the requirements:

Each candidate must perform creditably on snare and one additional category as follows:

I. Snare Drum
A. One solo or etude of moderate difficulty.
B. Demonstrate control of the sustained roll at all dynamic levels.
C. Sight reading at a moderately difficult level.
II. Marimba, Xylophone, or Vibraphone
A. One solo or etude of moderate difficulty.
B. Major scales and arpeggios through four sharps and four flats and the chromatic scale performed from memory.
C. Sight reading at a moderately difficult level.
III. Timpani
A. Perform a solo or etude of moderate difficulty.
B. Demonstrate control of the sustained roll at all dynamic levels
C. Demonstration of accurate tuning.
D. Sight reading at a moderately difficult level.
IV. The candidate may perform a Multiple Percussion solo or etude in lieu of one of the above requirements.
VOICE
Two contrasting selections from the appropriate volume of the The Young Singer (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) published by R. D. Row, or similar standard classical songs or arias. To audition as a transfer student with upper class standing, the student should select more advanced repertoire and demonstrate a proficiency in foreign languages (i.e., Italian, French, and German).
MUSICAL THEATER
One selection from the appropriate volume of The Young Singer (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass)published by R.D. Row, or similar standard classical song or aria; and one selection from a musical theater show; one monologue reading from a musical production. To audition as a transfer student with upper class standing, the student should select more advance repertoire.
INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ
Perform one jazz selection (any jazz etude, standard tune, transcription, rock tune, original composition, or standard classical piece). Prospective students will be asked to improvise (any jazz standard, blues, or rock piece). Rhythm instrument players should be prepared to demonstrate accompanying techniques (comping chord changes). Drummers should be prepared to demonstrate the following rhythm feels: (l) swing, (2) rock, (3)latin-samba, (4)bossa nova.
CLASSICAL GUITAR
Perform one piece (or single movement) from either composer in each group below:
A. J.S. Bach or S.L.Weiss
B. F. Sor or M. Giuliani
C. H. Villa-Lobos or A. Lauro
The overall audition should demonstrate melodic and arpeggio style playing.
HARP
Perform as listed below:
A. Naderman: Book of Seven Progressive Sonatas, Op. 92 (Select any sonata)
B.Grandjany: Petite Suite Classique (Select any two movements)
ORGAN
Perform as listed below:
J.S. Bach: Any Choral Prelude or Prelude and Fugue
Brahms: Any Chorale Prelude from Op. l22
Langlais: Organ Book (No. l-Prelude, No. 5-Musette, or No. l0-Pasticcio)
PIANO
I. Performance Majors:
A. Perform at least two pieces from memory from two different periods. Selections should equal the difficulty of:
  1. Baroque: Bach Inventions, Preludes and Fugues, French Suites, Scarlatti Sonatas
  2. Classical: one movement of a Mozart, Haydn, or early Beethoven sonata
  3. Romantic: Chopin Mazurkas or Preludes, Short works of Brahms or Schumann
  4. Contemporary: Bartok Hungarian Folk Songs or Sonatina; Kabablevsky Preludes
B. Technical
  1. Scales-four octaves, major and minor, hands together
  2. Arpeggios-four octaves, major and minor, hands together
II. Music Education Majors:
A. Perform one piece from memory and one with the music from two different periods. Selections should equal the difficulty of such pieces as:
  1. Baroque: Bach, Inventions or Little Preludes
  2. Classical: one movement of a Clementi Sonatina or the Beethoven Sonata, Op. 49
  3. Romantic: the more difficult pieces from the Album for the Young by Schumann, Chopin Mazurkas, Grieg Lyric Pieces, or Brahms Waltzes
  4. Contemporary: Prokofieff, Children's Pieces, or Bartok, Mikrokosmos III
B. Technical
  1. l. Scales-two octaves, major and minor, hands together
  2. 2. Arpeggios-two octaves, major and minor, hands together

 

COMPOSERS (Theory/Composition Degree)

Students who wish to major in composition follow a two-step audition
process. First, each candidate must audition for the Theory/
Composition faculty by submitting the scores for 3 completed
compositions (with recordings or MIDI demos, if available).

If accepted by the Theory/Composition faculty, each candidate must
then audition for admittance to a secondary applied studio:
woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings, piano, or voice. See the

Scholarship Eligibility and Types of Scholarships

Provost and Talent Awards through the Department of Music:
Financial assistance is awarded to students who are pursuing music major or music minor degree programs at SIUE.  The following guidelines apply:

To be eligible to receive a Provost or Talent Award, students must audition for, and be accepted by, the Department of Music.  Audition information (dates, requirements, and application forms) is available from the SIUE Music Department Homepage (www.siue.edu/MUSIC), or by contacting the Department of Music Office.  In addition, students must be accepted into the University in order to receive a financial award from the Music Department.

All students auditioning for entrance into the department are considered for financial awards; however, only auditions completed by the final posted audition date will be eligible for scholarship consideration.  Auditions occurring after the final posted audition date will be for entrance consideration only, and not for scholarship consideration.


The Department of Music offers two types of scholarships:

Provost Awards—
The Provost Award is the highest award offered to music students by the department.  It is a 50% tuition (only) waver.  To qualify for this award a student must score high on the entrance audition, have at least a 3.0 GPA in high school and a 27 ACT score.  The award is valid for 4 years of study at SIUE, is awarded only to music majors, and is renewable annually based on the following criteria:

1) Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA each semester and an overall 3.0 Cumulative GPA.
2) Progress toward completion of a degree with a major in music as determined by the music faculty.
3) Contribute to major ensembles as assigned.

Talent Awards—
The talent award varies from $500 to $1000 and is a cash grant awarded in the spring semester. To qualify for this award a student must score high on the entrance audition, have at least a 2.5 GPA in high school and a 21 ACT score.  The award is valid for 4 years of study at SIUE, is awarded to music majors and music minors, and is renewable annually based on the following criteria:

1) Maintain at least a 2.5 GPA each semester and an overall 2.5 Cumulative GPA.
2) Progress toward completion of a degree with a major in music as determined by the music faculty.
3) Contribute to major ensembles as assigned.


In addition to the above requirements, male Provost Award winners must sign a Statement of Selective Service Registration Compliance stating that they have registered for the Selective Service.

Current students in music degree programs at SIUE not receiving awards may audition for scholarship consideration at the posted entrance/scholarship audition dates.

Students with outstanding credentials may be considered for Chancellors or Presidential Scholarships.  For more information on these awards please visit the university financial aid web site at www.finaid.siue.edu/finaprog/schlships.html.

Please note:

All males 18 and older must present documented proof of compliance with registration for the Selective Service.
