The teacher will begin by asking the students to write their definition of diversity. After several minutes the teacher will read the definition from a dictionary. In small groups the class will write down the characteristics/differences that are portrayed in their own class. For example, talents, race, and physical traits may be included. The teacher will ask the groups to share their ideas, while he or she writes them on the board.

bullet

Next, the teacher will ask the following questions:

bullet

Think about a time that you may have been picked on or teased for being different?

bullet

Has anyone witnessed a person being treated unfairly for being different?

bullet

If so, what would you have done differently?

bullet

Students will be asked to share situations and examples that don’t involve fellow classmates as well as leaving out names. The teacher will conclude by having the students to rewrite their unique definition or diversity. Volunteering students will share their definition with the class.
