Materials:

Approximately 15 comic strips (placed on note card)

bullet

Approximately 10 children’s joke (placed on note card)

bullet

Magnets or tape to post note card

Procedure:

The teacher will begin by asking the students when the last time they read the funny section of the newspaper or hear a funny joke. The teacher will ask, “What is the one comic strip that they enjoy reading the most?” The teacher will place students into groups. The teacher will give the students three comic strips and two jokes. Each group will be asked to pick the one which they believe is the funniest. The teacher will stress the fact that they are to find the funniest comic or joke. Once all groups have chosen their most favorite, each group will share theirs. The call will then vote on their favorite.

Next, he teacher and students will discuss the following:

Why they thought certain comics/jokes were funnier than others?

Did your group struggle with making the decision?

bullet

If your group had a hard time, why do you think that was the case?

bullet

Did anyone feel embarrassed if they thought one was funny but the other group members did not? (Vice Versa)

bullet

What would life be like if we all thought the same things were funny?

bullet

The teacher will conclude the lesson by discussing the importance of respect toward others. People should not be made fun of because they think a joke is not funny, have different hobbies, dress differently, or even act a certain way.
