Learning Goals

Using Technology

Use appropriate instruments, electronic equipment, computers and networks to access information, process ideas and communicate results.

This unit will incorporate many resources on the Internet. For science, teachers will be given sites for resources to help with background information and classroom activities. There are many kid-friendly sites with a wealth of information and areas to explore. Students will be able to read documents and research projects from experts. They will encounter career information if any of these areas peaks their interest. Students will travel on their own journey as they make decisions on a Webquest and a Thinkquest.

Communication

bullet

Express and interpret information and ideas.

bullet

Students will be able to demonstrate numerous skills related to communicating effectively in various ways and for meaningful purposes. They will use visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities to express the unique multi-media presentations that represent their individuality. By presenting information that is purposeful to them in written and oral forms, students will be encouraged to express emotions that are reflective of their personal character traits and enhance the development of working relationships with others.

Working on Teams

bullet

Learn and contribute productively as individuals and as members of groups.

bullet

It is important that students develop skills of communication and problem solving to become productive members of the working world. In this unit they will be grouped in various subject areas. Throughout this unit, students will share ideas, plans, and evaluations. Also, the class will work together to formulate and discuss their own ideas. Individuals will use listening skills while their fellow classmates express goals and views. Following this unit, students will have a better understanding and acceptance of others and their differences. Therefore, they will be better prepared to contribute to society.

Solving Problems

bullet

Recognize and investigate problems; formulate and propose solutions supported by reason and evidence.

bullet

Students will be given ample opportunities in this unit to solve problems. Solving problems requires skills utilized in all subject areas: reading, listening, comprehending ideas, discussing questions, communicating ideas through written and oral means, and justifying their reasoning. Some problems are mathematical in orientation, while others require scientific inquiry. Still others require skills learned in decision making and understanding consequences of actions. Becoming a problem solver is an essential skill in life-long learning.

Making Connections

bullet

Recognize and apply connections of important information and ideas within and among learning areas.

bullet

One of the more obvious goals in developing this unit was to enable students to make connections among the disciplines. Skills learned in one subject can be utilized across the curriculum. As students complete activities designed to help them explore their identity, they are continuously making connections between ideas and information learned in reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies lessons in this unit. The ability to make connections will directly contribute to the success of students in school, in the workplace, and in the community.
