A Novel Study 

Day 2

Objectives:

Students will get a better understanding of the setting for the novel.

bullet

Students will complete a web quest on the computer.

bullet

Students will gather information, use reading strategies and comprehend new information to complete the on-line web quest.

bullet

Students will select one of 5 “Holes” and present group presentations lasting ten minutes which will include either a power point presentation, a video with a written script, a research paper (individual only) or some other presentation approved by the teacher.

4.B.3b Design and produce reports and multi-media compositions that represent group projects

5.C.3c Take notes, conduct interviews, organize and report information in oral, visual and electronic formats.

Materials:

Copy of the book Holes by Louis Sachar for each student

bullet

Computer Lab or shared computers for groups of 3-5 students

bullet

Availability of PowerPoint on computers for presentations

Procedures:

bullet

Read the chapter during read aloud time for the students. In the computer lab go to the web site http://webtech.first-district.resa.k12.ga.us/tbphillips/HolesWebQuest.htm#Introduction

Go over the introduction and the task and hand out a written copy of the task to the students for their folders. Have them vote quickly with a first of second choice of the hole that they would like to dig in first.

Put all sheets in a pile and take out the first 5 that have a #1 choice and they will begin digging in hole one and begin their project. Continue with those digging in hole #2 etc. When all groups have been filled, give them an evaluations sheet.
