Holes

A Novel Study 

Day 2

Objectives:

	Students will get a better understanding of the setting for the novel.
	Students will complete a web quest on the computer.
	Students will gather information, use reading strategies and comprehend new information to complete the on-line web quest.
	Students will select one of 5 “Holes” and present group presentations lasting ten minutes which will include either a power point presentation, a video with a written script, a research paper (individual only) or some other presentation approved by the teacher.

Illinois Learning Standards:

	1.C.3c. Compare, contrast and evaluate ideas and information from various sources and genres.
	1.C.3d. Summarize and make generalizations from content and relate them to the purpose of the material.
	2.B.3a Respond to literary material from personal, creative and critical points of view.
	2.B.3c Analyze how characters in literature deal with conflict, solve problems and relate to real-life situations.
	3.C.3b Using available technology, produce compositions and multimedia works for specified audiences.
	4.B.3b Design and produce reports and multi-media compositions that represent group projects
	5.C.3c Take notes, conduct interviews, organize and report information in oral, visual and electronic formats.

Materials:

	Copy of the book Holes by Louis Sachar for each student
	Computer Lab or shared computers for groups of 3-5 students
	Availability of PowerPoint on computers for presentations

Procedures:

	Read the chapter during read aloud time for the students. In the computer lab go to the web site http://webtech.first-district.resa.k12.ga.us/tbphillips/HolesWebQuest.htm#Introduction
	Go over the introduction and the task and hand out a written copy of the task to the students for their folders. Have them vote quickly with a first of second choice of the hole that they would like to dig in first.
	Put all sheets in a pile and take out the first 5 that have a #1 choice and they will begin digging in hole one and begin their project. Continue with those digging in hole #2 etc. When all groups have been filled, give them an evaluations sheet.

Assessment:

The Web Quest will be worth 100 points as follows Introduction 10 Presentation 20 Contents 20 Format 20 Panel Discussion 20 Conclusions 10
