Holes

A Novel Study 

Day 1

Objectives:

Students will be issued individual copies of the book Holes by Louis Sachar and we will be reviewing pre reading questions they should be asking themselves before they read.

bullet

Students will complete a graphic organizer, similar to a KWL chart, with questions about the title and the author. They will note how many pages there are in the book, how many chapters and notice that the book is divided into 8 sections.

bullet

On the other side of the paper the students will make a prediction of what they think that the story is about.

bullet

With a partner, they will draw a picture of what a boy’s detention camp might look like and include a picture of the camp warden.

Each child will need paper for the drawing of boy’s detention camp.

Procedures:

On day one the students will be assigned a numbered copy of the book Holes.

bullet

After receiving a copy of the book, students will observe the cover of the book carefully. They must look for questions they might have about the author or the title.

bullet

Pass out the QAR chart. Each child will be responsible for filling in at least 3 questions on the QAR chart after looking at the cover, front and back of the book. They must also fill out they number of pages and chapters.

bullet

When completed they will turn the paper over and begin with their written prediction of what they think the story will be about.
