Goal:

bullet Student will become familiar with certain words from The Land of Many Colors and to connect ideas while attending to what is being read.

Objectives:

bullet Students will become actively engaged while listening increasing comprehension

Materials:

bullet Land of Many Colors, one brad per student, one pre-punched color strip student, Various other strips all precut and pre-punched, Blue, green, purple, brown colored paper card stock paper, white card stock paper, empty envelopes, colored dots purchased cut into strips( you will need enough for two strips per student.

Instructions on how to make strips:

bullet Using blue card stock paper run the paper through the printer once, printing one edge of the paper.
bullet Run it thorough the printer three more times until the word blue is aligned front and back and on both horizontal edges as shown.
bullet Cut the sheet lengthwise with a paper cutter. then cut individual strips.
bullet Punch a hole in the edge of the strip opposite the word.
bullet Follow the same instructions for green, dusty (brown) and purple paper. For happy, food, animals, house, toy and plant follow the same instructions using white card stock.

Instructional Procedures:

bullet Give each student an envelope containing one each of purple, blue, green, happy, food, dusty, animal, many, toy and plant strips and one brad.
bullet Have students put strips one at a time on the brad and then open the brad up to catch all the strips.
bullet On the “many” strip, instruct students to put multi colored dots on that strip front and back.
bullet As you read instruct students to be ready to raise the strip that you are talking about.

Activity:

bullet Read Land of Many Colors slowly with students with students. As you turn the pages make sure to stop and see if all students have the correct strip raised. For example when you read “these are the purple people.” each student should have their purple strip raised.
bullet Be sure to pause and check strips with each page turning.
bullet It may take time to get through the story but students will be actively engaged.
bullet Because the word is on both sides of the strip, the student can begin to identify the word with the concept.
bullet Have students decide on their favorite color and draw a page after completing the story with their favorite color person, food and pet.
bullet This concept will work with other idea books by making more strips or even sometimes the same strips.

Assessment:

bullet Have students use the proper color or draw a picture of the concept next to the concept word.
