Time Frame: 2 days—30 min and 15 min

Goal:

bullet Students will plan and create murals that show how their lives intersect with Martin Luther King’s life

Objectives:

bullet After reading My Brother Martin, students will create a mural with image and text that shows the life stories that influenced both MLK and themselves. They will then write about the similarities and differences.

Materials:

bullet Rolls of newsprint and colored pencils
bullet Theme paper and pen

Instructional Procedures:

bullet The teacher will read and discuss My Brother Martin with the students, paying particular attention to the stories Daddy King tells to his children.
bullet In small groups students will brainstorm about stories told to them by parents, other family members, and older members of their community.
bullet They will use these stories in murals that show both Martin’s and their own experiences.
bullet Finally they will write about the similarities and/or differences of their experiences.

Activities:

bullet Day 1
bullet Students will meet as a class to discuss My Brother Martin. The teacher will focus the discussion on the stories of Daddy King.
bullet Students will meet in small groups to discuss their own stories.
bullet When they have created a list of their own stories, they can make their murals, using a roll of newsprint
bullet Top Half
bullet Students will write an explanation of the stories that influenced Martin and then illustrate them
bullet Bottom Half
bullet Students will write an explanation of their influential stories and then illustrate them
bullet Day 2
bullet Students will write a one page explanation about the similarities and/or differences between their own stories and Martins.
