Cambourne (1988) did a study on how child learn language.

He found  eight conditions that facilitate language learning.

bullet Immersion- Children must be constant immersed in language in classrooms where print is used for a variety of purposes.
bullet Demonstration—Children need to have the process modeled for them including think-a-louds.
bullet Engagement—Children must be involved in print.  They must read, write, listen and speak often with out fear of recriminations.
bullet Expectation—There must be the expectation on the part of the teacher that the child will accomplish the task.  The child must think they can do the task.
bullet Responsibility—Children must assume responsibility for their learning.
bullet Use—Children must have opportunities to practice and to experiment.
bullet Approximation—Children need to have praise for their attempts to use language and teachers should see errors as a sign of learning taking place.
bullet Response—Children need to have feedback that provides a positive example and reinforcement of learning.
