A Few Words on Safety

Working in the media often puts students at more risk than in other fields. Mass Communications students should recognize the hazards prevalent in media production and especially in some news reporting situations. Since the university does not cover the medical expenses of students injured in classroom or educationally-related activities, the department strongly urges all students to obtain health insurance.
Department Policy on Transfer Credit From Other Accredited Colleges and Universities
Courses in Mass Communications acceptable for transfer credit from other colleges will be determined by:

(a) a transfer compact for certain courses with that college or university;
(b) an analysis of the content of the course for a close match with a Mass Communications Department course;
(c) in the case of a skills course such as Radio or Television Production, both item "b" above plus some form of student demonstration of competency in a particular set of skills.

Department Policy on Incompletes:

The grade of Incomplete (I) will be given only in extraordinary circumstances. College of Arts and Sciences policy requires that a contract be signed by the students and the instructor before a grade of incomplete is given. A copy of that contract follows.

Rules for the Use of Mass Communications Department Video Equipment

Mass Communications Department equipment is available only to students currently enrolled in Mass Communications courses which require the use of that equipment for assigned projects.
Students are responsible for the equipment they use.
Students who violate department policies, demonstrate negligence or repeatedly return equipment late will be denied future use of equipment.

Equipment use may be reserved in advance on the sign-up sheets located in Dunham Hall by room 1020. Sign up sheets will be posted Friday at 8:00 A.M. for the following week.
Students who do not use the portable equipment or the video editing systems during the times which they have reserved will be fined $10, unless engineering is notified of cancellation (phone 650-2243), 24 hours prior to the scheduled time.

Video Editing Systems
System Apportionment

MC204, Video Production students will have exclusive use of the three VHS linear editing systems and the four Media 100 nonlinear editing systems.

During semesters in which they are simultaneously scheduled, students in MC332, Electronic Media News, MC454, Documentary Media, MC334, Electronic Media Advertising and MC 431, Corporate and Nonbroadcast Video, will share exclusive use of the two Avid Media Suite Pro nonlinear editing systems.

MC333, Advanced Video Writing and Production students will have exclusive use of the Avid MCXpress non-linear editor.
With the exception of the Avid MCXpress, editing stations not in use may be used, on a priority space-available basis, for students whose assigned editing stations are booked.

3. Students may sign-up for a maximum of two hours of editing time per day on a maximum of three days in a calendar week. Students may use equipment which has not been reserved on a "first come - first served" basis.
