Plagiarism, in essence, is the theft of someone's words or ideas. When you plagiarize you make your audience think that work you took from another source is your own. However, the reality is that you cut and pasted, copied, or summarized text from someone else without attributing those thoughts or words to the original author.
Anytime you aquire knowledge about a topic you should state where and from who you gained the knowledge - this is especially important in academic writing.
Plagiarism is a very serious offense. It is usually handled by failure of the assignment, but consequences can be more severe such as failing the course and in extreme circumstances a student can be expelled from the university.
