The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Writing Center is dedicated
to providing students across the university an equal level of quality assistance
in grammar, organization and revision of their papers; to creating an effective
environment where students are both comfortable and engaged during the writing
process; to empowering students with enough knowledge to become critical of
their own writing and identify repetitive errors; to integrating and improving
writing skills in the classrooms of all faculty, staff and students in every
SIUE department and unit; to facilitating knowledge through one-on-one collaborative
assistance, informative handouts and developmental workshops; and to training
quality writing assistants who are knowledgeable and helpful to all levels
of SIUE students.
Philosophy
Writing enables individuals to logically and coherently communicate an idea to an audience; furthermore, it assists in the formulation of organized structures that can be utilized with authority and confidence when in conversation. We encourage students to view writing as a process that is as much an individual as it is a collaborative activity with an emphasis on revision and reader feedback. However, we also understand that often it is only by reading critically that students begin to formulate advanced writing techniques and improve the nature and presentation of ideas. Thus, the Writing Center serves the university as an open and diverse place where a critical, yet philosophical, level of discussion can transpire concerning writing and ideas related to such an endeavor.
