Have you ever noticed that when you utilize an expansive vocabulary, you feel more intelligent?  A well-developed vocabulary can enable you to feel like an educated, well-rounded individual.  Boost your confidence level by implementing the following words into a conversation with another student, a supervisor at work, or an instructor.  Remember, you are judged by how you speak and write!

1) hubris  Pronunciation: HYOO-bris;  Function: noun
: exaggerated pride or self-confidence
Example sentence:
Many have fallen into the trap of Icarus, and soar, overcome with hubris, until their pride is thwarted and rude reality hurls them earthward again.

2) recalcitrant  Pronunciation: rih-KAL-suh-trunt; Function: adjective
: obstinately defiant of authority or restraint
: difficult to manage or operate
:
not responsive to treatment
:
resistant
Example sentence:
Anna's doctor ordered a week of complete bed rest, but, ever recalcitrant when it comes to doctors' orders, she was up and baking a cake after two days.

3) jabberwocky  Pronunciation: JAB-er-wah-kee; Function: noun
: meaningless speech or writing
Example sentence:
"The salesman started spewing computer jabberwocky at me like an auctioneer. I understood about every sixth word he uttered" (Larry D. Clifton  qtd. on Merriam-Webster Online).

4) rapscallion  Pronunciation: rap-SKAL-yun; Function: noun
: rascal, ne'er-do-well
Example sentence:
"The film ["Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl"] stars Johnny Depp as the sauntering, dark-eyed rapscallion Capt. Jack Sparrow. . . ." (Anthony Breznican qtd. on Merriam-Webster Online)
