The National Association for Developmental Education awarded Advanced Certification to the Instructional Services developmental coursework program component in mathematics, reading, and writing at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville during NADE’s 28th annual conference in March 2004.  Advanced Certification in this program component, valid for seven years, is awarded based on evidence of good practice grounded in a sound theoretical framework that produces evidence of student success both while in developmental courses and beyond when compared with peers (www.nade.net).

Instructional Services staff unofficially began the certification process in 2000 when the department used NADE’s Self-Evaluation Guides to undertake a self-study of the program’s strengths and areas of potential weakness in order to assess the quality of instruction and student learning outcomes.  In addition, the self-study provided a vehicle for establishing benchmarks for student outcomes, determining ways in which courses contributed to the development of College of Arts and Sciences Characteristics and Capabilities of graduates, and contributing to the University’s participation in AQIP.

Two Instructional Services staff members (Terri Reed and Rhonda Vonnahmen) and the Instructional Services director (Karen Patty-Graham) attended NADE certification training and were primarily responsible for the written application, although Ms. Reed left SIUE in August 2002.  All department staff members were involved in theoretical framework  review, curriculum review and revision, a follow-up self-study using the NADE Guides, application review, and action plan development through a series of department retreats and the ongoing work of the instructional area heads with Rhonda Vonnahmen and Karen Patty-Graham.

Instructional Services learned much about student performance in developmental courses, in subsequent courses, and in retention to graduation.  The department also noted ways other departmental components complemented the developmental coursework component.  We also strengthened our program internally and within the institution as a result of our engagement in the certification process.
