Undergraduate Senior Assignment
GENERAL INFORMATION
Geography is a spatial discipline that encompasses both physical and human aspects of the environment. It is a discipline that synthesizes knowledge and information from a wide variety of sources. Major areas of knowledge in geography, summarized in the National Geography Standards (1994), are: (1) the World in Spatial Terms, (2) Places and Regions, (3) Physical Systems, (4) Human Systems, (5) Environment and Society, and (6) the Uses of Geography. As an integral component of the geography program, the Senior Assignment in the Department of Geography examines the effectiveness of the program in instilling these areas of knowledge in its graduates.
COURSE PURPOSE
All students enrolled
at SIUE complete a senior assignment project as a culminating experience of
their undergraduate careers. In Geography, the senior assignment is a research
project that includes data collection, data processing and analysis, and presentation
of the results in the form of an illustrated poster or a research paper. Details
for both assignments can be found in the course
syllabus. Additional resources to help identify a topic, develop a research
