Scheduled electrical outage/Edwardsville Campus/Saturday, November 28, 2009

The Edwardsville campus electrical outage for the Saturday after Thanksgiving is still scheduled. The crews at AmerenIP have worked out a method to reduce the impact on the campus. There will now only be one outage instead of the previously announced two. On the morning of Saturday, November 28, between 8:30 and 10:00 AM, power will be shut off to the core of the Edwardsville campus for an estimated 1  2 hours.

The outage will affect the core of the Edwardsville campus including the academic buildings, residence halls, Student Fitness Center, MUC, Supporting Services Building, and Early Childhood Center. University Park, Birger Hall, Cougar Village, ERTC, buildings on Stadium Drive, and the Credit Union will not be affected.

It is strongly recommended that people not come to campus during the electrical outage. There will NOT be any lighting in most campus stairwells. Elevators will not be operational.

The outage is to allow AmerenIP to upgrade the electrical feed to the Religious Center to improve safety and reliability.

FM electricians will be working in Lovejoy Library upgrading the emergency power distribution system in the building. As a result, power will be off for all or parts of the building for most of the day. Lovejoy Library will be open on Friday November 27, but closed on Saturday November 28.

Holiday Hours
To commemorate the Thanksgiving Holiday, campus buildings will be closed Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 2009.  When access to a building is needed over a holiday, departments should contact Ed Matecki, Assistant Director for Utilities, at 2258.  He will make arrangements with the Building Engineers to open the area.  However, occasionally even after arrangements are made, the engineer may be on an emergency call or otherwise engaged when access is called for; the Police can then be contacted at 3324 and they will radio the engineer.

Note that various departments on campus may have other schedules; when in doubt, contact the individual department for more information.

SIUE H1N1 Site
In light of the concern about the H1N1 flu (also known as swine flu), SIUE has established a web site devoted to H1N1 issues.  The information includes recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) that everyone can use.  Check it out at:
http://www.siue.edu/misc/h1n1/   Further inquiries can be directed to University Health Services at 2842 or Emergency Management and Safety at 3584.

Focus on the Alton Campus School of Dental Medicine

Within the town of Alton, Illinois are a number of buildings which are very significant to the history of SIUE.  They are the original home of Shurtleff College, the school that later became SIUE, and the current home for the SIUE School of Dental Medicine.  With construction dates ranging from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s, the buildings require quite a bit more care than the buildings on the Edwardsville Campus.  To restore the beauty of the buildings and on the practical side, to maintain their integrity, many repairs/renovations have taken place recently that had a huge impact on the appearance of the campus.  Photos of the changes can be viewed at the Facilities Management website at www.siue.edu/FACILITIES.

Note that these repairs are not the “glamorous” kind, but they do make a huge difference in the appearance and longevity of these stately old buildings.  The Facilities Management Offices share a building with the Gym which received new windows, new roof with deck insulation, full tuck pointing and a new bicolor exterior.  Great care and research went into these changes to ensure the appearance of this building was in keeping with the time period of the original campus construction.  The Science Building also had windows replaced in addition to drain work at the north exterior, repairs to some stone sections and some tuck pointing.  Work continues on the conversion of its basement to a Testing Center.  The Administration Building sports new windows as well, had spot tuck pointing, and the basement was waterproofed.  The Biomedical Library (a Carnegie Library constructed in 1912) was fully tuck pointed and got a new porch roof.  New windows will be installed soon on the Center for Professional Advancement and new window installation is well underway on Pediatric Dentistry.  These are simply the highlights of the many improvements made to this historic campus, a campus especially lovely when fall leaves blanket its grounds.
