Service Alerts & Activities

SIUE H1N1 Site
In light of the concern about the H1N1 flu (also known as swine flu), SIUE has established a web site devoted to H1N1 issues.  The information includes recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) that everyone can use.  Check it out at: http://www.siue.edu/misc/h1n1/   Further inquiries can be directed to University Health Services at 2842 or Emergency Management and Safety at 3584.

Restroom Changes
Consolidation of sanitary machines to the first floor ladies’ rooms in Edwardsville campus buildings was completed the first week of September 2009. Consolidating services will result in better customer service with stock inventory and machine maintenance.

With the N1H1 virus making the rounds, staff and students are encouraged to report empty soap dispensers or any undesirable restroom conditions by calling FM Customer Service at ext. 3711 OR Building Services ext. 2067 for a prompt response.

Peck Hall Family Restrooms
Family restrooms are now available on each floor in Peck Hall anytime the building is open.  These restrooms are ADA accessible with power door operators and are equipped with baby changing stations.  They are unisex facilities open to all University faculty, staff, students and guests.

Restrooms are near the 200 wing of the building and are designated with blue “Family Restroom” signs.  Signage at the main restrooms provides a map showing the locations.  They will be picked up on the building directories the next time they are updated.

Since these restrooms are designed for use by one family or person at a time, users are reminded to lock the door when using the facility.

The family restroom concept supports persons with disability who have an aide of the opposite sex as well as parents with children.  By embracing the family restroom concept in this building, FM was able to meet the needs of those with special needs without reducing the number of fixtures available in the main restrooms.  Converting the main restrooms to meet ADA requirements would have negatively impacted the number of fixtures available, especially in the women’s restrooms, and would not have met the concerns the family restrooms can resolve.

No Campus Clean-Up
In previous years, a project called “Campus Clean-Up” was held in late October or early November and Grounds crews and Surplus worked together to gather any and all Surplus items.  Departments would fill out their paperwork and move items into the hallways to await pick up by the Grounds crew.  To streamline the process, paperwork now goes directly to Ron Klaustermeier in Central Receiving and he and his workers are available to pick up surplus throughout the year.  As a result, the amount of surplus items to be picked up decreased considerably.  Departments are reminded that pick up is at NO CHARGE and can occur at any time through the year.  However, paperwork is still necessary and can be faxed to 2830.  Questions go to John Krieter at extension 3256.

Student Success Center Landscaping
FM Grounds workers have completed the first phase of landscaping around the three acre site of the Student Success Center.  Grass was seeded and strawed and 35 trees were planted, including Columar Maples, Crabapples, Sugar Maples, Zelchovas, Honey Locusts, Tree Lilacs, and Autumn Blaze Maples.

Shocking Information
In order for AmerenIP to complete a safety upgrade of the campus distribution system, two electrical outages will take place on the Edwardsville campus on Saturday, November 28, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  The first outage will take place that morning from about 9AM until 11AM, with a second outage late that afternoon, also of about two hours duration.  This schedule assumes no more than the “normal” number of issues while performing the work.

This outage will affect all buildings in the campus core including the four residence halls and Early Childhood Center.  It will NOT affect Cougar Village, ERTC, WWTP, University Park, Birger Hall, Korte Stadium, or the Credit Union.  Further updates will be sent as the date draws nearer.

Fire Prevention Week

Anyone who has ever been a Scout Leader is familiar with Fire Prevention Week, more specifically the week in which October 9th falls, and many people know the date was used to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.  The fire began October 8th, burned for three days, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2000 acres.  But, incredibly, though it was the best-known blaze to start during that three-day stretch, it wasn’t the biggest!

The Peshtigo Fire, which also occurred on October 8th of that same year, roared through northeast Wisconsin and burned 16 towns, killed 1,152, and scorched 1.2 million acres!  Historical accounts say railroad workers clearing land for tracks unintentionally started a brush fire that, according to some survivors, whipped through the area “like a tornado.”  The entire town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin was destroyed within an hour.

Both the Chicago and Peshtigo fires produced countless tales of bravery and heroism but certainly changed the way firefighters and public officials thought about fire safety.  On the fortieth anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America (today known as the International Fire Marshals Association) determined that the best way to observe the anniversary should be in a way that would keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention.  Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls since 1922 and is the longest running public health and safety observance on record.  Presidents have proclaimed a national observance during that week every year since 1925.
