Uplifting News
After a recent visit from one of Illinois’ elevator inspectors,
modifications are required for elevators in Lovejoy Library and Rendleman
Hall. The work will begin on Monday, July 28, 2008, in Rendleman
Hall. The first elevator to be taken out of service will be the east
elevator; it will remain out of service for four hours as modifications are
completed. Workers will then move on to the west elevator. The
anticipated schedule calls for repairs in Rendleman Hall to be complete
through Monday and Tuesday, with work moving to Lovejoy Library on
Wednesday. Any changes in the schedule will be reported to the campus
community through e-mail.
Changes coming soon…
Construction of a small parking lot at the end of Peck Drive and renovation
of the pavement at the south entrance of the Music Addition of Dunham Hall
will, weather permitting, begin during the week of July 28, 2008. Keller
Construction is the contractor for both projects, which should be completed
within four working days.
Repair of the concrete gutter of Cougar Lake Dam will also begin during the
week of July 28, 2008. Thiems Construction is the contractor for the
project which should be complete in two working days, weather permitting.
Very Important Date Reminder
To perform safety and reliability upgrades on the campus electrical
distribution system, AmerenIP has requested two campus wide electrical
outages. These are tentatively scheduled for August 16 and November 22-24,
2008; watch the ClipBoard for any changes and updates.
Help!
Facilities Management is breaking in a new work order system and the
University community has been very patient and helpful; just a reminder
that both the FAS and AIS account numbers should appear on Service
Requisitions (access Service Requisitions
at:

Project Updates
Edwardsville |
|
Alton Campus
Several projects are occurring at the Alton Campus. For several years, the
basement of the Administration Building has been unfinished and is now
being renovated. One of the key problems was water infiltration that
flooded the basement floor. Currently a waterproofing contractor is
applying waterproofing to keep water from penetrating the wall along with a
drain tile system to direct water away from the basement. Also, the roof
on Loomis Hall has been replaced and currently, the carpet on the main
floor of the Library is being replaced. Plans call for new windows to be
installed in the Administration building this fall and, hopefully, in the
Science Building next summer.
ESLHEC
The exterior enhancement project that affected the three original campus
buildings has been completed. New enclosed vestibules allow the stairwell
doors to remain open and provide additional circulation paths between
floors in the Classroom Building. All three buildings had new windows
installed in all openings, which has greatly improved the noise and
temperature levels. A by-product of the new windows is better energy
efficiency, very important as the price and natural gas and electricity
soar. The project to add guardrails around roof-top equipment and replace
the wrought iron fence and gates are on hold until the State Legislature
passes the budget for this year.
Residence Road
Recently, Residence Road from Circle Drive to Prairie Road was reduced to
one lane so broken, rough pavement could be removed. A new solid base will
be installed followed by new asphalt pavement. New concrete curbs will be
installed along most of the road replacement. The contractor expects to
finish in early August, weather permitting.
ADA Upgrade
The contractor resumed work on the elevator addition to Building 8280 on
the Alton Campus in May when school was completed. The elevator is being
installed while the contractor breaks through the wall between the addition
and the existing building in order to make the connection/passage. This
project should be finished in early August which will complete the full ADA
Upgrade project.
Two segments of the proposed ADA Upgrade were removed from the project and
will be completed as a Small Project by CDB. One is an accessible restroom
in the ERTC and the other is a new chair lift in Dunham Hall on the south
side of the Theater. This project is on hold until the State passes a
fiscal appropriation bill.
Science Building
The architects have provided Design Development documents for review and
comment from the University and CDB (Capital Development Board). Comments
are due by the end of July. After comments are received by CDB, they will
be issued to the architects. This project will be put on hold as no monies
from the state are available to proceed further. If the State Legislature
passes a Capital Improvements Bill which includes the appropriation for the
new Science Building, the architects will proceed with development of
contract documents to bid the project. Bidding could occur within nine
months of the appropriation approval.
Student Fitness Center
The closed parking area west of the Fitness Center is an easy indicator of
the work occurring at the Student Fitness Center. Of course, plywood walls
seen from the interior are also an indication of construction. The
contractor has poured the concrete foundation and is working on the floors
of the office addition. The main building addition should have footings
and foundation walls poured within the next two weeks. The office area is
expected to be complete around the time the fall semester starts; the major
addition is scheduled for completion next May.
Vadalabene Center Gym
Lots of activity has been occurring in the Gym; both stairwells on the west
side have been removed, portions of the wood gym floor were cut out, new
concrete footings have been poured, electrical rough-in has been started,
the plumbing for the new restrooms is moving right along, (though the hot
water will have to be disconnected for about half a day soon) duct work is
being installed and the sports equipment has been removed for
refurbishing. Steel is being delivered and installed for the
mezzanines. This project has a tight schedule; the lower level bleachers
and the wood gym floor have to be available for competition by October 15,
2008. The contractor is on schedule to meet that date.
Early Childhood Center
Good bids were received and construction contracts were awarded for this
project. Unfortunately, there is a primary electrical line in the way of
the addition that AmerenIP will have to relocate. The electrical
contractor will install the empty conduit and AmerenIP will install the
electrical service. The power to the RecPlex will be out for about a day
when the switch-over is made.
Student Success Center
A large drill rig has been on site for several weeks, drilling holes for
poured concrete piers to support the addition. These holes average about
60 feet deep below the new basement level. The contractor is generally
able to create two holes a day and there are over 50 piers under the
building. The electrician is running new service from the existing
basement in the area of the tunnel and will extend that service along the
south side of Morris University Center.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR:
A message from FM’s Director…
While people inside SIUe know what an excellent job FM people do, it is
extra nice when people outside the institution recognize their efforts. In
two recent efforts, the outstanding work of FM was recognized.
In May, SIUe hosted the Women’s Great Lakes Regional Softball
Tournament. Rainstorm followed rainstorm throughout the event. On the
last day of the tournament, power was lost at the field due to another
storm. As FM crews were working to get the field ready to play and FM
crafts were working to get the PA and scoreboard working, the head of the
officiating crew commented that, “Any other field in the country, we
wouldn’t be able to play today. Your people have done an outstanding
job.” This reflects not only the work and knowledge of FM crews that work
to keep the fields playable, but also the work and expertise that goes into
the fields year round to be in shape to withstand the beating they took and
still be safe and playable.
In recent weeks, carpenters, electricians, laborers, painters and plumbers
have worked on top of each other to completely rebuild the Starbucks on
campus on an extremely aggressive schedule. On the final inspection, the
regional Starbuck’s manager expressed amazement not only at the quality of
the work, but the ability of different crafts to cooperate and work
together. “I would never see that on our contracted jobs,” he said. The
response of the craft foreman was equally telling, “Well, that’s what we do.”
FM has an outstanding group of people who do outstanding work day in and
day out, usually without much recognition. To one and all, thank you for
what you do to make SIUe special.

Way to Go!
Recently, a Building Service Worker called the Custodial Office to report
she had found some money while working in Rendleman Hall. The money was
all in one hundred dollar bills. Campus Police were notified; they made a
report and secured the money ($400.00 total). What a blessing her honesty
turned out to be! Greg Conroy had been looking for the money, which was
for a charity. Kudos to this fine employee, Aretha Clemons, Building
Service Worker I, for her honesty.
