Edwardsville:

Snow Routes
Main building entrances, especially the accessible entrances, in addition to being the first to be cleared, also get more frequent follow up cleaning. They are generally the flattest entries to the buildings, and traffic helps keep them clear. "Snow Route" signs designate entrances that will receive first and most frequent attention in case of snow and have been posted at:  http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/campmap/snow.htm     Handicapped entrances are denoted by (H).

Routing Change to prepare for Student Success Center
Note:  This work may alter the route students use to come to campus; please pass this information on to them.  Preliminary work to prepare the site for the utility relocation project is underway.  A temporary entry road has been constructed from the service road entry way to serve the site.  Soon, the fence to enclose the site will be erected and students will have to alter some of their routes between the Residence Halls and the University Center.  The south entrance to the Food court adjacent to Chik-Fil-A will remain open, but the other south entrance near Cougar Den and Freshens will be closed.  The contractor will complete work in February if the weather cooperates.

Trash / Recycling Schedule
Building occupants who were on campus over the summer are well aware of the changes in trash/recycling pick up. Office trash and recycling is now picked up every other week; one week trash, the other recycling.  To learn the pickup schedule for a department, go to:  http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/cleaning/schedule.htm   Recycling weeks are:  February 4, 18; March 3, 17 and 31; April 7 and 21; May 5 and 19, June 2, 16, and 30.  The opposite weeks, of course, trash is picked up.  Call the Building Services line at extension 2067 for further assistance.

Locked out??
New ID cards are required for Keyless Access use after January 2, 2008.  Staff, faculty and students are reminded to obtain a new University ID/Cougar Card.  Re-carding is currently under way in the Service Center in Rendleman Hall.

Water Problems…
In order to connect a new sewer line, water to the Engineering Building restrooms was shut off on Friday, January 25, 2008.  The connection was completed by the afternoon; only the restrooms were affected.  Drinking fountains and sinks remained available for use as no water testing was necessary.

Lost and Found
For many years, items found by the Building Service Workers on their rounds were returned to the Building Services office. Faculty, staff and students would check with Building Services first in their search. Soon, people just assumed that Lost and Found was at the Building Services office. However, the “real” Lost and Found on campus is at Union Station. Found items should be returned to Union Station or if many people are in line, the items can be turned in to the Information Center next door. Building Service Workers will be leaving the items at Union Station or the Information Center, also. If the item lost is as important as a Student ID or an ATM card, workers at Union Station or the Information Center will be glad to assist in locating it.  Purses and wallets are at Union Station for one day only, then forwarded to University Police for safekeeping

Kudos to the SIUE School of Dental Medicine

Once a year, the SIUE School of Dental Medicine, the Madison District Dental Society and the St. Clair District Dental Society sponsor an event known as “Give Kids A Smile Day.”  The program, which is in its fifth year, includes professionals and volunteers from the community.  It offers access to dental care to children who may not otherwise be able to see a dentist and includes examinations, X-Rays, cleanings, fillings, extractions and more.  School-age children qualified to participate are those eligible for free and reduced-priced meal programs, but the program is open to qualified children between the ages of 3 and 13.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, February 2, with registration from 7:30-11:30 a.m. in the School of Dental Medicine Main Clinic, Building 8263, 2800 College Ave., Alton, IL.  In addition to dental work (which will be performed throughout the day at no charge), fun activities are planned for the children.  The Lewis & Clark Community College Dental Hygiene and Assisting programs are hosting a “Smile Station” which will feature games to help children learn the importance of keeping their teeth clean.

In the previous four years, dentists, hygienists and dental students have treated close to 800 children and provided almost $190,000 in free dental treatment.  Among the program’s supporters are State Rep. Dan Beiser, D-East Alton, and State Sen. Bill Haine, D-Alton, who have been invited to attend.  Further information can be obtained by calling Sherie Gottlob at 618-474-7200.

What a fine way to educate youngsters and serve the community as well!
