Water Problems Abound…

A major water main break occurred on campus the morning of Wednesday, January 9, 2008, in front of Rendleman Hall. Due to the quick action of the Operating Engineers, the break was isolated before the campus lost water pressure. However, the high water flows due to the break stirred up sediment that was in the lines resulting in discolored water in both Peck and Rendleman Halls. While the water was safe to drink, water coolers were put out as quickly as possible into both Peck and Rendleman.  However, as noted there was NO boil order and the water was safe to drink, shower, cook, wash hands, etc.

In order to work on valve replacements, water was shut off to DUNHAM HALL beginning at noon on Friday, January 11, 2008.  The work took a few hours, so water may be back on and restrooms available; however, water used for drinking will have to be tested.  It was hoped that water service would be restored on Monday, January 14, 2008; however, the first test was not clear and a second had to be taken, resulting in an extension of the boil order.  Potable water was provided.  FM appreciates the patience of the University community.

Student Success Center
Note:  This work may alter the route students use to come to campus; please pass this information on to them.  Preliminary work to prepare the site for the utility relocation project is underway.  A temporary entry road has been constructed from the service road entry way to serve the site.  Soon, the fence to enclose the site will be erected and students will have to alter some of their routes between the Residence Halls and the University Center.  The south entrance to the Food court adjacent to Chik-Fil-A will remain open, but the other south entrance near Cougar Den and Freshens will be closed.  The contractor will complete work in February if the weather cooperates.

Reminder!

By Illinois law, beginning January 1, 2008, smoking will be prohibited in a public place or place of employment or within 15 feet of an entrance to a public place or place of employment, unless exempted by the act.  No person may smoke in any vehicle owned, leased or operated by the state or a political subdivision of the state.

Also required by law, each public place and place of employment where smoking is prohibited must have posted at every entrance a conspicuous sign clearly stating that smoking is prohibited.  All ashtrays must be removed from areas where smoking is prohibited.

In the days before the new law takes effect, the signs will be posted on University doors and ash urns moved to the appropriate places.

Readers who smoke are asked to remember this is a state law and not a University one.  There is nothing FM can do except what is required by state law.  A very good summary of the new Illinois no smoking law can be found at:  www.idph.state.il.us/tobacco/Smoke_Free_Act_q&a.htm

The Illinois Department of Public Health, local public health departments and local law enforcement agencies are required to enforce the act.  These agencies may assess fines for violations.  The Illinois Department of Public Health will establish a telephone number by January 1, 2008, for persons to call and register a complaint.

Consideration…
Sharps Containers: Diabetics and others who must inject themselves are reminded to obtain sharps boxes from their health care provider or Health Service.  Please do not place needles in trash cans! They are a hazard to the BSW staff and others.

Trash / Recycling Schedule
Building occupants who were on campus over the summer are well aware of the changes in trash/recycling pick up. Office trash and recycling is now picked up every other week; one week trash, the other recycling.  To learn the pickup schedule for a department, go to:  http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/cleaning/schedule.htm  Call the Building Services line at extension 2067 for further assistance.

Locked out??
New ID cards are required for Keyless Access use after January 2, 2008.  Staff, faculty and students are reminded to obtain a new University ID/Cougar Card.  Re-carding is currently under way in the Service Center in Rendleman Hall.

Snow Route Signs
Main building entrances, especially the accessible entrances, in addition to being the first to be cleared, also get more frequent follow up cleaning. They are generally the flattest entries to the buildings, and traffic helps keep them clear. "Snow Route" signs designate entrances that will receive first and most frequent attention in case of snow and have been posted as listed below. Handicapped entrances are denoted by (H).
