NOVEMBER/DECEMBER CLIPBOARD
UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT 50 Years of Service to the University Community www.siue.edu/FACILITIES HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT! Service Alerts & Activities Christmas Break Campuses will be closed with NO building access (except those with after-hours card access) from end of business December 23, 2008, to reopen on January 5, 2009. NOTE: During Holiday breaks, all buildings are locked and heating/cooling is on a holiday schedule unless exceptions have been noted by the department (and usually sent via e-mail to the campus community) and/or FM has been notified. Faculty/staff/students using keyless entry during the break should be aware that, due to the modified heating/cooling schedule, buildings will be cooler then usual. Snow removal is modified during the break period, also. It’s That Time Again… Mating deer are on the move beginning in October, and State Police are reminding drivers that means they may be moving into the paths of motorists. The deer mating season between October and December makes the animals more active, which means they are more likely to run out in front of vehicles and cause accidents. Drivers should be especially alert around wooded areas and farm fields. According to Master Trooper Ralph Timmins, an average of 300 such accidents happen in the area each year, involving 23,000 deer! Most of the serious crashes are the result of evasive maneuvering by drivers attempting to miss the animal. In the attempt, they sometimes hit another car or truck or a fixed object and can cause serious injury or death. Hitting the deer may destroy the deer and severely damage the automobile, but rarely injures people. According to police, the best thing to do when encountering a darting deer is to brake and try to steer away from the deer while remaining within your traffic lane or on the shoulder. Driving out of the lane or off the shoulder is dangerous. People should prepare for evasive action if they see a deer near the roadway and should not assume the animal will not bolt into traffic lanes. Except for their eyes, deer do not reflect light. At 55 mph, a driver has only one second to react, not nearly enough time to avoid an accident. (Information from The Telegraph, October 11, 2005)
News that will floor you… Facilities Management is putting together a bid to replace about 14,000 square feet of carpeting between fall and spring semester. FM is reviewing the carpet requests that were received and getting bids for the areas selected. The Gift that will keep on giving… Building occupants are reminded to be certain all food trash is discarded into the appropriate receptacles before leaving for Christmas break. The banana left in a trash can in December will be especially unpleasant by January, and everyone in the office, perhaps everyone on the floor, will notice! Just in Case… Employees who need to be on campus during Christmas break should be aware of the following: In case of a police emergency…………………………………………Dial 911 When in need of campus police assistance……………………………Dial 3324 When reporting building problems……………Dial 3513 and follow instructions Think Green… Temperatures in campus buildings are kept at the bare minimum during Christmas break while buildings are unoccupied. Most plants do fairly well in cooler temperatures; however, building occupants whose plants are especially sensitive to cold may consider taking the plants home over Christmas break.
