Labor Day Holiday
Edwardsville, Alton, and East St. Louis Campuses are closed on Monday,
September 1, 2008, to commemorate Labor Day. All buildings will be locked;
those who must come to campus will need to use keyless access. Building
problems should be reported to University Police at 3324; they will radio
the building engineer.
Building Service Worker Changes
Facilities Management is moving to more day cleaning of office
areas. Customers seem much more satisfied with their office cleaning when
they see it happen.
With the increase in office cleaning in the day time, the evening shift is
moved back an hour and a small third shift will be added to cover heavy
floor work and work missed on second shift due to absences.
A detailed plan which includes who cleans what, when, is in final review
and will be available soon.
This change began August 11, 2008; feel free to report any comments or
concerns as follows:
Mark Janes, Building Service Supervisor,
mjane@siue.edu extension 2067
Dee Woolfolk, Office Support Associate,
:dwoolfo@siue.edu extension 2068
Steve Brandenburg, Assistant Director,
sbrande@siue.edu extension 2069
Lynda Pavia, Customer Service Representative,
fmserv@siue.edu extension 3711
The mission of Building Services is to provide quality custodial service to
the University academic buildings using available resources.
Reminder
Keyless exterior access to SIUE buildings for students is granted for the
current semester only. Any student needing access during break weeks must
have their name submitted to Key Control through their department chair or
director office. The student must have been enrolled the semester prior to
the break period.

Project Updates

Miscellaneous Campus Projects
Work to overlay the existing tile floors in all of the restrooms in Alumni
and Founders Halls is well underway. The Men's and Women's rooms in Alumni
Hall have been completed; Founders is complete except for repairs scheduled
through the Labor Day weekend. New toilet partitions are scheduled to be
installed also; the expected delivery date is mid-to-late September. Once
received, the partitions should be installed in a few weeks depending upon
schedules to close the restrooms.
Alton Campus
The waterproofing of SDM, Administration/Student Center, Building 8273,
basement has been completed and well tested by some of the recent heavy
rains. Thankfully, the work passed the test. Shortly, the paving will be
completed and the parking lot expanded to add a few spaces. The passage to
the east will be closed to eliminate some dangerous corners. The new
outside lounge area just west of the clinic building is finished. The
Sterilization area renovation was completed just before school resumed and
the contractor did an excellent job of completing the work in a tight time
frame.
ESLHEC
The Capital Development Board (CDB) has rolled over monies to allow the
roof guardrails and the wrought iron fence replacement projects to
proceed. The architects have completed the design on the roof guards and
it will soon be out for bids. The contract with the architects on the
fence design will be completed shortly and the design work will commence.
Residence Road
The contractor completed the project in time for the start of school. The
road is very smooth and the concrete curbs look good. Unfortunately, grass
seeding cannot occur until "cooler" weather is more likely, which is after
Labor Day. Thus, the dirt will be there for a few more weeks before
seeding takes place.
ADA Upgrade
The contractor is completing the punch list work on the 8280 elevator
addition. One major issue remains; the installation of permanent power
between the electric panel and the elevator equipment. CDB is reviewing
this issue and should soon issue the solution.
The design work of the ERTC accessible restroom and the replacement chair
lift in Dunham Hall south of the theater is ready for review by CDB and
SIUE. Hopefully, the review will go quickly and this project can be out
for bid in September.
Science Building
The University and CDB are reviewing the Design Development submittal from
the Architect and Engineers. The comments will be returned to the A/E who
will incorporate those items into the final Design Development submission
after which the project will be put on hold. Until the State Legislature
passes a Capital Improvements Bill, no money is available for this
project. The University does not want to proceed with construction
documents until the money is released in case some time (months or even
years) pass without a Capital Improvements Bill. Even after the bill is
passed and signed by the Governor, a 9-12 month delay ensues before
construction can begin.
Student Fitness Center
The expanded office area has been enclosed and roofing work completed. The
interior partitions are being erected along with the electrical service in
the office. The gym extension has the footings and frost walls poured and
steel erection will start within the next few weeks. It will be exciting
to see the roof trusses erected; they are over 100 feet long!
Vadalabene Center Gym
The wood gym floor is installed and the sanding and finishing well under
way. The two mezzanines have the steel erected and the concrete floors
poured. The expanded restrooms are progressing with a new topping slab
poured. In the areas under the mezzanines, the partitions are
starting. All underfloor plumbing and electrical work has been completed
and work in the ceiling areas is underway. The contractor promises that
the gym floor, first floor bleachers and athletic equipment will be ready
for completion by October 15th.
Early Childhood Center
The electric service has been relocated by AmerenIP which has allowed the
contractor to set his trailers and begin earth moving. The 4,000square
foot addition will be built north of the existing building and is scheduled
for completion by the end of the calendar year; however, the delay in
moving the electrical service has set the schedule back about two
months. The contractor will look for ways to improve the schedule.
Student Success Center
Drilling and pouring of the concrete piers is nearly finished. Soon the
basement walls will be formed and poured along with concrete grade
beams. Once these items are completed, more work will be visible to
passers-by.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR:
Faculty, staff and students may have noted quite a bit of work being done
in restrooms in the past year, especially in Founders and Alumni Hall.
The restroom renovations in Founders and Alumni are nearing completion.
They include new sinks and countertops, new fixtures, a new floor and
shortly, new toilet partitions. The renovations are also bringing the
restrooms in the building into full compliance with ADA and the Illinois
Accessibility Act. The renovations are aimed to reduce water consumption,
make the restrooms easier to keep clean, update appearances, and replace
worn out hardware. New countertops also eliminate a long standing problem
of the countertops draining forward onto people's clothes.
Design work is starting on Peck Hall. The project will be similar. FM is
looking at how to best update the half round wash fountains. The floors
will receive the same treatment as the ones in Founders and Alumni, the
toilet partitions will be replaced and the remaining ADA issues addressed.
FM has already discovered that the original design in Peck had far fewer
sinks than would currently be required to meet the usage, and work
continues on how to address that shortfall, especially in the most heavily
used restrooms on the first floor.
In general the project is handling restrooms building by building, but in
some cases upgrades are being done by type of fixture across the campus.
For example, last year we completed the installation of automatic flush
valves in all major heavily used restrooms. This fall a particular type of
urinal that uses an excessive amount of water will be upgraded. Half round
wash fountains in the Library will probably be updated at the same time as
the similar fixtures in Peck.
One of the biggest restroom upgrades will be unveiled in January. The
number of restroom stalls serving the Vadalabene Gym is being greatly
increased. The number of men's stalls is being doubled and the number of
women's stalls is being quadrupled in the first floor restroom adjacent to
the large gym.
One of the driving forces in this ongoing project is the reduction in water
usage. While Edwardsville doesn't have the critical water supply issues
that parts of the country have, the aquifer is not unlimited and the region
is spending large sums of money trying to keep up with demand. These
capital costs are being reflected in rapidly rising water rates. The
larger driver for SIUE is the capacity of the campus waste treatment
plant. The University operates its own State regulated waste treatment
plant near ERTC. Expanding the plant to handle more flow would be extremely
expensive - $2+ million. Most of the fixture upgrades are reducing water
usage by 50 - 75%. By reducing water consumption in our existing buildings
the Plant will be able to handle the increased demand of a growing student
population, including the new buildings under construction, planned, and
included in the Campus Master Plan. Not the least of these is the new Red
Cross facility in University Park.
FM recognizes that having restrooms out of commission for the upgrades is
an inconvenience, and is working to reduce the number of outages as the
project goes forward.
